Position Summary

The Department of Steward Observatory seeks highly motivated individuals to fill the position of Instructional Specialist. This is a non-benefits eligible, on-call position that will be assigned to work at the Astronomy Camp programs. There are multiple openings for this position. Instructors are selected by the Camp Director.

The Steward Observatory Astronomy Camp hosts residential science education programs for teenagers, educators, and adults at remote, high altitude (9200 feet) observatories on Mt. Lemmon and Kitt Peak.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Instructors are engaged in the professional content and conduct of the Camps, in operational support, and in post-Camp follow up of research projects, publications, etc.
  • Teach and mentor students in basic principles of astronomy, physics, engineering, environmental science, and computing using inquiry-based learning techniques.
  • Develop and lead all-night observing sessions with large aperture telescopes, electronic instrumentation, and image processing analysis software.
  • Assist and guide students in cooking, cleaning, hygiene, time management, etc.
  • Work extended and irregular hours and are responsible for Camp participants full-time for periods as long as eight days/nights.
  • May be required to undergo training in basic first aid, CPR, and operation of University High Occupancy Vehicles.
  • Possess outstanding academic background, work ethic, and personal characteristics including organizational and interpersonal skills, mentoring abilities, and physical stamina and motivation.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Arizona Board of Regents Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, four years of progressively responsible instructional or subject work experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience working with the Astronomy Camp programs at the University of Arizona.
  • Previous experience working at the University of Arizona.
