Position Information

Title Assistant/Associate Professor in Biosystems Informatics (TE)
Department Agric & Biosystems Engr-Res (2422)
Medical Sub-Speciality
Location Main Campus
Position Summary

The Department of Agricultural & Biosystems Engineering (ABE) at the University of Arizona seeks to hire an engineer/scientist in a Assistant/Associate Professor (Tenure-Eligible) position to establish an interdisciplinary research program in using big-data approaches to solve biosystems problems. This faculty member will have a 20% Teaching component and 80% research component to this position. The Faculty member’s focus will be oriented towards food-water-energy nexus and/or interactions with humans.

The faculty member will teach courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels and contribute to mentoring students, including those from underrepresented backgrounds. The faculty member will also participate in outreach and contribute to departmental, college, and university service. In these and other ways, the faculty member will help to develop innovative approaches to enhancing student engagement, increasing diversity, and expanding collaborations with community and business partners.

The successful candidate will develop a research program to study biological/biomedical engineering systems using diverse large-scale datasets (e.g., sensors, biological markers, genotying, phenotyping), statistics, big data approaches, and engineering applications. This individual will work at the interface between departments at CALS (Nutritional Sciences, Animal and Comparative Biomedical Sciences, Veterinary Medicine, Plant Sciences, and ABE); the Colleges of Medicine, Public Health, Nursing, and Pharmacy; iPlant Collaborative; and BIO5 Institute.

The Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering prepares students with a fundamental knowledge of the physical, biological, and engineering sciences, engineering design, and engineering practice for the full span of agricultural and biosystems areas. The students use engineering, math, and biology to design systems to manage soil and water resources and to design and develop biological and biomedical products. The tools used in research range from satellites, to drones, to nanotechnology, to big data science. In order to assist with feeding 9 billion people, the research is focused on: optimizing growth conditions and resource use in controlled environment agriculture, finding alternative fuel and feed sources, irrigating crops sustainably, and analyzing big data sets generated from using bio-sensors and controls and looking at metagenomics.

This new faculty member in ABE will position the UA to take advantage of evolving big-data technologies to promote biomedical research in the crossover between animal and human health and promote the UA’s Strategic Plan: Never Settle. In particular, this position offers exceptional opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration at UA. Given the global aspects of the food-water-energy-human nexus, multi-investigator and multi-institution partnerships are vital and can promote larger funding opportunities. Moreover, funding for research in this area ranges from basic science to biomedical health outcomes for humans and animals and is available from established sources (NSF, NIH, USDA, and private foundations) and novel sources (crowd-sourcing and public-private partnerships).

Outstanding UA benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance plans; life insurance and disability programs; UA/ASU/NAU tuition reduction for the employee and qualified family members; state and optional retirement plans; access to UA recreation and cultural activities; and more!

Accepting a new position is a big life step. We want potential candidates and their families to be able to make informed decisions. Candidates who are considering relocation to the Tucson or Phoenix area, and have been offered an on-site interview, are encouraged to use the free services offered by Above & Beyond Relocation Services (ABRS).Ask your department contact to be introduced to ABRS prior to your visit.

Duties & Responsibilities

The tenure-track faculty member will be responsible for establishing an applied engineering and big-data science program to solve challenges in the food-water-energy-human nexus. The candidate will apply imaginative engineering solutions to complex and interdisciplinary problems with a dedicated interest in data-science research.

The responsibilities and duties include:

  • Establishing an applied engineering/big-data science research program focused on technology development.
  • Securing extramural grants to support the research program.
  • Teaching one course per year in the area of biosystems informatics or big data analytics.
  • Collaborating with colleagues across the university and partnering with industry to develop potential disclosures, patents, licenses, and start-up companies.

This individual’s home department for tenure is Agricultural & Biosystems Engineering, and will be co-located with existing ABE faculty. The position will have a 20% teaching and 80% research split. The position is available immediately.
