Position Summary

The University of Arizona in Tucson seeks a Vice Chair for Research and Professor with tenure in the Department of Medical Imaging, and Director of the Center for Advancement of Imaging Technologies in UAHS. The Department of Medical Imaging provides clinical services to Banner – University Medical Center (BUMC) which includes the sole Level 1 Trauma Center in southern Arizona, the Diamond Children’s Medical Center, University of Arizona Cancer Center, South Campus Hospital, University Medical Imaging and community sites throughout Arizona. The Department of Medical Imaging and BUMC are undergoing major growth and investment, making this an attractive opportunity for the successful candidate. The department has a strong research core and is undergoing major investment in facilities and advanced technology.

Construction of the Bio-Sciences Research Laboratory building has commenced in the 4th quarter of 2015. This four-story structure will have one floor dedicated to imaging instrumentation. The Department of Medical Imaging, in partnership with the Office of Research and Discovery and other UA departments, will cover the costs of physicists and technologists who will operate BSRL equipment for experimental studies. The Department of Medical Imaging currently employs two dedicated MRI physicists with full-time responsibility to support applications development and research studies, in addition to dedicated research-trained MRI technologists and study coordinators who will support your studies. Additionally, Medical Imaging has an established Master Research Agreement (MRA) with Siemens that includes on-site engineering.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Work with the UAHS leadership, clinicians and scientists across the health and basic sciences to develop interdisciplinary programmatic research and innovation with a focus on neurological sciences.
  • Participate in both undergraduate and graduate medical education, advising duties, and committee assignments.

Provide key strategic leadership for the planning, utilization and acquisition of neuro-imaging research equipment and technology include the following enterprise investments:

  • 7T MRI in the Bio-Sciences Research Laboratories (BSRL)
  • 3T Prisma MRI in the Bio-Sciences Research Laboratories (BSRL)
  • Dedicated research 3T Skyra MRI (active and twinned with a clinical Skyra MRI)
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD in Medical Physics (specializing in MRI) or equivalent.
  • Eligible to be appointed as Full Professor with tenure.
