Title Postdoctoral Research Associate I (Multiple Positions)
Department Ecology & Evolutionary Biology (0420)
Location Main Campus
Position Summary

Applications are invited for a creative postdoctoral scientist, preferably with experience in field-instrumentation, image or remote sensing analysis, and/or modeling, to join an interdisciplinary collaboration in Brazil (jointly funded by U.S. DOE, and the Brazilian Sao Paulo State and Amazonas State Science foundations). The science goal is to use novel “local remote sensing” methods with novel camera systems to discover how environmental and ecological mechanisms jointly regulate the dynamics of photosynthesis in tropical forest canopies, from individual tree crown to landscape scales.

Outstanding UA benefits include health, dental, vision, and life insurance; paid vacation, sick leave, and holidays; UA/ASU/NAU tuition reduction for the employee and qualified family members; access to UA recreation and cultural activities; and more!

The candidate will work as part of a team of Brazilian and U.S. collaborators, and will focus on installation, analysis and interpretation of advanced tower-based camera systems (we will have 3 vegetation camera systems — hyperspectral, thermal, and 4-band RGB-NIR — at two Amazon forest sites, along with hemispherical full-sky images of the incoming radiation field). The research will involve collaborating with a partner post-doc in Brazil (at INPE, the Brazilian space agency) to apply advanced image analysis techniques for integration with associated in situ and remote sensing data (including leaf-scale measurements, eddy fluxes, and airborne LiDAR surveys and satellite observations).

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications

Ph.D. in Biology or related field and research experience in remote sensing/image processing, atmospheric radiation, or engineering.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferably, the selected candidate will be highly motivated, have strong communication skills, and seek to both take a leadership role for specific project components and collaborate with members of a broad international and interdisciplinary team; as well as have experience in field-instrumentation, image or remote sensing analysis, and/or modeling.
