Position Summary

The University of Arizona seeks to hire accomplished scientists and leaders in toxicology, environmental health, and interdisciplinary research to direct the Arizona Board of Regents Center for Toxicology and the Southwest Environmental Health Sciences Center (SWEHSC). These centers are a foundation for research on the health effects of environmental agents, while serving as a resource to the Southern Arizona community.

The Director of the Arizona Board of Regents Center for Toxicology will be expected to play a statewide leadership role and coordinate with University of Arizona Health Sciences efforts at our Tucson and Phoenix campuses, as well as other research and clinical institutions across the state, to facilitate the discovery and dissemination of new knowledge to be translated into solutions for the prevention and treatment of disease, injury, and morbidities associated with environmental factors. Infrastructure development and new faculty hires will be coordinated with appropriate academic units to support successful center development.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide executive-level leadership toward the definition of organizational goals, targets and key strategies focused on toxicology and environmental health science. These activities would be expected to drive collaboration across all UAHS units and disciplines (including institutional leaders in rural health, minority health, basic medical sciences, and informatics), the Phoenix Biomedical Campus (PBC), and the University’s broad biological sciences community.
  • Oversee all NIEHS programmatic initiatives within the UA Health Sciences including the Southwest Environmental Health Sciences Center, the UA Superfund Research Program, the T32 Toxicology Training Grant, the R25 EHS-TRUE Training Program, and the Dean Carter US-Mexico Binational Center for Environmental Health Sciences.
  • Drive strategic program development and resource allocation decision-making that enhances and improves the University’s competitive position and overall ranking for extramural (e.g., NIH, DOD, etc.) funding across the health and biological sciences disciplines.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with senior leaders, directors, managers, and external stakeholders to meet and exceed University and UAHS goals and objectives.
  • Promote the vision of the UA/UAHS to local, regional, national and international constituencies through networking, speaking engagements, and representation in professional associations/publications.
  • Act on behalf of the College of Pharmacy Dean and Senior Vice President for Health Sciences on various committees and in discussions with various stakeholders.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities appropriate for the Center Director position.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications
  • Advanced health professions or science degree (e.g., MD, PhD, PharmD, DNP, etc.), and eligibility for a University of Arizona academic appointment at the Associate Professor level or higher.
  • Demonstrated relevant experience in toxicology and/or environmental health sciences research and program management, preferably in an academic institution.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in faculty development and mentoring.
  • Strong record of extramural funding in translational research.
