The Department of Pharmacology in CoM has a strong internationally recognized program dedicated to the study of various forms of pain including cancer, skeletal, neuropathic, headache, and inflammation-induced pain, as well as molecular and cellular changes in the blood brain barrier. The expertise of the current faculty members encompasses a spectrum of molecular, neurobiological, cardiovascular, and neuropharmacological techniques allowing for vibrant collaborative efforts designed to address the question of the underlying causes and treatment of chronic pain.

To this end, a Research Specialist position is available in the Streicher Lab in the Department of Pharmacology. This position will focus on in vitro screening for novel drugs targeting the PACAP system for the treatment of neurodegenerative disease. Further work may focus on the identification and testing of novel signaling regulators of the mu opioid receptor both in vitro and in vivo, and further novel drug screening projects. Additional responsibilities will include basic laboratory support, such as routine cell culture, and supervision of junior lab personnel (i.e. undergraduate students). The candidate should be energetic and motivated with a strong work ethic, independent, and well organized. The candidate should have excellent communication skills in written and oral formats. The Research Specialist will report directly to the Principal Investigator (John Streicher).

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Perform experiments to further existing research programs and grants, concentrating on in vitro screening of novel drug candidates for the treatment of neurodegeneration and pain.
  • Generate new ideas and projects for development.
  • Assist with preparation of grants and manuscripts.
  • Routine lab maintenance (i.e. cell culture).
  • Management of trainees, projects, and lab function.

Minimum Qualifications
Arizona Board of Regents Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND two years related research experience; OR, Six years research experience appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong experience with cell culture models of signal transduction, molecular biology techniques, and in vitro drug screening.
  • Experience with lab management.
  • Strong work ethic and an interest in developing independent research projects.
