Position Summary

The Department of Pharmacology at the University of Arizona seeks a Behavioral Post-doctoral associate who will work on developing and evaluating new therapies for malignant and non-malignant skeletal health and disease under the direction of Dr. Patrick Mantyh. This program will be focused on using behavioral analyses to investigate the molecules that regulate skeletal health, aging, disease, and pain. Research will be focused on the regulation and modulation of skeletal pain using molecules including NGF and sclerostin in bone cancer, bone fracture, and the aged skeleton mouse models.

Applicants must be able to commit to working in the lab for a minimum of two years.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Plan, coordinate and conduct active rodent behavioral research on a semi-independent basis under direction of PI.
  • Uphold timely, appropriate, and professional communication with PI.
  • Work collaboratively with PI and fellow lab members.
  • Supervise technical and non-technical staff.
  • Follows lab safety regulations for handling and disposing of test samples.
  • Develop and understand scientific rationale for experiments.
  • Express active interest in independently learning scientific background and current research done in the field in order to work towards contributing new ideas that promote current research.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Assist in preparation and publication of scientific manuscripts.
  • Write and update SOP manuals.
  • Execute experiments and participate in experimental design.
  • Excellent data analysis capabilities, leadership experience essential.
  • Preference will be given to more advanced individuals who have a proven track record of exceptional publications, funding (if appropriate), a promising or highly regarded professional reputation, and the potential for scientific leadership.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. degree.
  • Excellent writing, communication, and organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Interest in developing new behavioral paradigms.
  • Read and understand the background literature, and ultimately become qualified to become a full author on the papers that result from their work.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Highly motivated and have an interest in learning and applying new techniques.
  • Background and hands on experience in a rodent laboratory or veterinary setting.
  • Background in performing rodent behavioral observations and analysis; including but not limited to activity boxes, weight bearing and locomotion.
  • Significant interest in developing new behavioral paradigms to study skeletal health.
  • Creative thinking skills.
  • Independent drive to study relevant literature.
  • Experience and desire to design and perform experimental animal research.
  • Strong proficiency in the English language as members of the lab routinely author peer-reviewed manuscripts.
