Position Summary

The Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Arizona is currently accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate I to work in the research group of Dr. John J. Wiens.

The incumbent will focus on diversification in land plants. Specifically, they will study the correlates of large-scale patterns of diversification and species richness across major plant clades as well as patterns of speciation and niche evolution in plant lineages in Mexico and the adjacent United States (especially those occurring in arid regions).

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. degree in Plant Sciences, Evolutionary Biology, or any other related field. They should have experience with the evolutionary biology of plants; preferably with the xerophytic flora of Mexico and North America. Extensive experience with comparative and phylogenetic methods is also required.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assembling a database of ecological characteristics and richness of plant lineages.
  • Assembling a database of genetic sequences data for plant lineages.
  • Data analysis using phylogenetic comparative methods.
  • Estimation of diversification rates and divergence dates for plant lineages using molecular data.
  • Interpretation of results and manuscript writing.
  • Collaborating with other members of Dr. Wiens working group.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. degree in Plant Sciences, Evolutionary Biology, or any other related field.
  • Experience with the evolutionary biology of plants.
  • Extensive experience with comparative and phylogenetic methods.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with plant lineages in Mexico-North America.
  • Experience with molecular phylogenetic methods, estimation of divergence dates and diversification rates from molecular data.
  • Effective writing skills for the publication of articles in scientific research journals.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Experience with the evolutionary biology of xerophytic flora of Mexico and North America.
