Position Summary

The Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) is located on Mt. Graham in south eastern Arizona, and is part of the Mount Graham International Observatory. It is unique both in having the largest total collecting area of any Optical/IR telescope and, more importantly, provides the largest optical baseline, which enables the highest resolution IR imaging through the technique of interferometry. With its 22.5m baseline, It is the first of the next generation of large ground based telescope that are expected to have baselines of 20m or greater. The LBT is a private telescope operated by an international consortium of universities from Germany, Italy and the United States – including the University of Arizona.

An Aircraft Spotter is a trained individual who assists with the safe operation of the LBT Observatory’s laser system. Work will be performed on Mt. Graham, near Safford, Arizona.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Perform as an aircraft spotter during laser propagation to assure that aircraft activity is noted and reported to the laser operator so that the laser is shut down to avoid any danger to aviation.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must pass a vision exam provided by the employer.
  • Work at high altitudes above 10,000 feet in cold conditions.
  • Ability to follow mandatory policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work a varying schedule of nights.
