Position Summary

Translational Optical Imaging (TOI) lab at the University of Arizona is seeking applicants to fill a Postdoctoral Research Associate I position. TOI lab is developing an innovative, low-cost optical microcopy technology and utilizing these technology for guiding disease diagnosis and treatment in low-resource settings. Dr. Kang has recently developed the world’s first smartphone-based confocal microscope that can examine cellular details of human skin in vivo and is testing the smartphone confocal microscope for diagnosing skin cancer in Uganda.

Current and future research projects include:

  • Low-cost smartphone confocal microscope for skin disease diagnosis and treatment.
  • Diagnosis of Kaposi’s sarcoma in Uganda.
  • Diagnosis and treatment of skin diseases in the US.
  • Low-cost endomicroscope for cancer diagnosis in low-resource settings.
  • Cervical and oral cancer diagnosis.
  • High-speed volumetric in vivo microscope.
  • Low-cost fluorescence confocal microscope.
  • In vivo disease diagnosis.
  • Medical and STEM education.
  • Automated image analysis for guiding diagnosis and treatment.

    Duties & Responsibilities
  • Development of new optical imaging technologies.
  • Pilot study of imaging excised tissues and/or human tissues in vivo.
  • Image analysis and diagnostic accuracy test.
  • Additional duties may be assigned.
  • Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
    Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD in Engineering or Science with focus on optical instrumentation.
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in biomedical optics, in vivo microscopy, clinical imaging.
