Position Summary

This position reports directly to the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology (MCB), and serves as frontline contact for undergraduate students for developmental academic advising to drive engagement and empower students to achieve their academic and career goals, plays a vital role in maximizing undergraduate student retention, and builds formative relationships with students by interpreting information and providing clarification on procedures and academic requirements of specific programs or majors. Academic Advisors have authority to approve students’ academic degree programs, including evaluating transfer credit and making exceptions to the program requirements under the auspices of their respective faculty.

Duties & Responsibilities

Principal Responsibilities:

This position serves students majoring in Molecular and Cellular Biology.
Presents academic and program information at freshman and transfer orientation to groups of students and their parents.
Interprets and advises students on University, College, and Departmental policies, procedures, and academic requirements.
Assists students in course planning to meet academic requirements and/or career preparation.
Identifies or evaluates options for students who must petition for an exception to a course or program requirement; makes approved adjustments to student’s program of study.
Assesses students’ stage of development (academic, career, and personal) to promote academic growth by determining suitable developmental tasks and engagement opportunities; helps students explore pertinent internships, club involvement, volunteer work, and undergraduate research opportunities.
Assists student in establishing realistic and attainable academic and career goals; refers students to additional career counseling services as needed.
Monitors academic progress of students; determines eligibility and satisfactory progress toward degree; identifies current and potential needs or problem areas (e.g., study skills, tutoring) and refers students to appropriate campus resources for further assistance.
Evaluates transfer credits from other academic institutions for equivalencies and application to degree program.
Maintains student files, records, and database; documents all pertinent student information in UAccess Advisor Notes; updates computerized information system regarding changes to student status, and performs data analysis as necessary.
Gathers and/or calculates necessary information such as GPAs or enrollment statistics; prepares various reports as requested.
Processes degree checks/audits for students planning to graduate.
Assists in the development and coordination of seminars, workshops, and other activities/events; develops and performs assessment of departmental advising events and activities.
Participates in relevant undergraduate committees.
Coordinates MCB Accelerated Master’s Program.
Serves on Department Curriculum Committee and submits curriculum updates to the University.
Other duties as assigned (examples of department duties may include curriculum updates, maintaining schedule of classes)

Distinguishing characteristics of job level:

This level is distinguished from prior levels in that Senior Academic Advisor I is responsible for the development of a special advising program. Senior Academic Advisor I are subject matter experts but do not have supervisor responsibilities.
Coordinates a special program (including but not limited to academic success, peer advising, mentoring, career placement, ambassadors, internships or college honors programs, etc.)
Has the knowledge and experience required to work with specialized groups of the student body
Utilizes University systems advisor tools with excellent proficiency (advanced analytics and reviewing data)
Serves as program liaison with campus and community partners including faculty and staff
Provides input on materials and/or curriculum in collaboration with faculty
Has knowledge of and experience with other colleges and the University as a whole
Routinely provides input regarding student data (such as enrollment and retention information)

Ability to prioritize workload and complete tasks efficiently
Knowledge of advising practices and principles
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Access)

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in related field and four years or more of experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience, training, and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications

Background/degree in life sciences
Familiarity with MCB program, career opportunities, undergraduate research, and curriculum requirements
Knowledge of graduate school, medical school and other pre-health admission requirements and necessary preparation
Experience with data analysis
Proficiency with Peoplesoft/UAccess/Analytics
Experience working with college-aged students
Experience working with diverse students
