Position Summary

The Financial Services Specialist performs functions related to the processing of payroll transactions for the University’s ~21,000 employees in accordance with the provisions of The University of Arizona, ADOA, and ABOR policies and procedures and local, state and federal laws. The Financial Services Specialist provides information and assistance on payroll processing to campus units, faculty, staff, and students. This position makes independent judgments within established limits and has some technical processing responsibilities.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Prepares and reconciles payroll transactions, leave time accrual and balance reports, and faculty/staff qualified tuition reduction forms.
  • Computes payroll calculations based on employees tax withholding status and deduction schedule as requested by employee.
  • Makes modifications in payroll system to update employee’s withholding information such as tax status, direct deposit enrollment or changes.
  • Posts and maintains wage assignments for child support, creditor garnishments, and federal and state tax levies.
  • Analyzes daily and biweekly payroll reports for accuracy and makes necessary adjustments or corrections.
  • Researches problems with paychecks that may include underpayments, overpayments, payment codes or accounts coded incorrectly.
  • Interacts with University units and outside agencies to resolve payroll related problems.
  • Recommends or participates in the development of new procedures and policies related to payroll operations utilizing knowledge of university, state, and federal policies and regulations.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Knowledge of, and demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.

  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of payroll administration, procedures, and systems; and federal, state and local laws related to the payroll industry.

Arizona Board of Regents Minimum Qualifications

Three (3) years of customer service experience, including at least one year of experience in accounting or finance; OR Associate’s Degree in Accounting or a related field AND one (1) year of related customer service experience; OR Any equivalent combination of experience training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Associates degree in Accounting, Business or Public Administration or a related function and two years of payroll experience; OR, five years of progressively responsible experience in a payroll related position.
  • Experience with a paperless transactional record retention environment and/or imaging systems.
  • Experience in analysis and improvement of policies and procedures.
  • Experience working in a higher education environment.
  • Experience working with PeopleSoft Applications.
  • Able to adapt to changes in the work environment.
