The School of Architecture at The University of Arizona develops design professionals and scholars with a sensibility honed in the conditions of an extreme climate on a major international border. In 2013, the school partnered with the Center for Integrative Medicine ( to create the Institute on Place and Wellbeing (UAIPW)

Through research, education, practice, and policy change, the UAIPW seeks to redefine sustainable design to incorporate human health and wellbeing outcomes and to re-define human health to fully encompass the role of the built and green environment.

An interdisciplinary effort, the UAIPW links expertise of the UA College of Medicine – Tucson, the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine (AzCIM), and the UA College of Architecture, Planning, and Landscape Architecture, actualizing the university’s commitment to a vision of human health that fully encompasses the role of the built and natural environment in health, wellbeing and healing. Through cutting edge research the UAIPW is taking person-centered health to the next frontier-“Person and Place-Centered Health and Wellbeing”.

This position will work under supervision of junior faculty to coordinate all aspects of the IARPA/MOSAIC study, IRB preparation for new data collection study, recruitment, consenting, application of monitors, downloading data on-site training, data analysis supervision, and supervision and training of on-site research coordinators.

Duties & Responsibilities

This is a non-tenure track position with a post Doctorate title. Responsibilities will fall in 3 major categories: research, teaching, and service. The successful candidate will:
• Write IRB and informed consent and instructional sheets for subjects related to use of biosensor devices for tracking stress response, activity, sleep quality and other health and behavioral outcomes.
• Coordinate with on-site research coordinator to recruit subjects, oversee informed consent, create data tracking spreadsheets
• Train with UA bioengineers on placement of Heart Rate Variability (HRV) biosensors and HRV data downloading; oversee and train on-site research coordinator to place and remove biosensors
• Work with UA Psychology and other institutional research partners to develop smart phone questionnaires for mood sampling, including selecting and implementing smart phone platform for data collection & storage & analysis
• Work with CAPLA, and other institutional research partners to perform building audits of buildings under study.
• Coordinate data collection with all groups, and other institutional research partners.
• May need to spend extended periods outside of Tucson, to oversee on-site data collection and subject recruitment in buildings under study.
• Demonstrate collaborative leadership with a number of stakeholders in complex relationships to the project.
• Engage students in outreach and research in best practices for healthy buildings.
• Contribute to the development of a healthy building curriculum.
• Advance scholarship in the fields of healthy building practice and pedagogy, fabrication and material science, sustainable construction methods, service learning pedagogy, and/or community design.
• Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications

• A Ph.D. in Architecture or Psychology or related fields.
• Minimum two years research experience in health and the built environment or related fields
• Collaborative orientation and research project management abilities

Preferred Qualifications

• Oral and graphic communications skills
• One or more of the following: record of scholarship in peer-reviewed publications; proven ability at grant applications, award, and delivery; teaching experience; proficiency in relevant research and design software
