Position Summary

The University of Arizona (UA), Campus Health Service’s (CHS) Laboratory department seeks a qualified candidate for the position of Phlebotomist. The chosen applicant for this position will be responsible for ensuring that specimens are correctly collected by drawing blood or giving instructions to patient for other types of specimens, as well as preparing specimens for processing by laboratory technicians or outside laboratories.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Greet patients (instruct them in proper specimen collection as needed).
  • Collect specimens, as ordered: (draw blood specimens, handles biohazardous body fluids). Label specimens for ID and centrifuges blood.
  • Log specimens that are submitted incorrectly into specimen integrity book, as required by CLIA.
  • Prepare specimen for transport to the reference lab.
  • Keep blood drawing area stocked and clean.
  • Ensure CHS clinicians receive test results in a timely manner.
  • Act as a liaison between the CHS and reference lab.
  • Shares the daily administrative Lab duties such as: answering and routing telephone calls, post charges into PnC for billing purposes, and oversee duties of the Lab student workers.
  • Additional duties may be assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Excellent customer services skills.
  • Keeping up to date with procedures unique to the CHS.
  • Experience in working with an electronic health record system.
  • Knowledge of various techniques in collecting specimens.
  • Ability to effectively communicate.

  • One year experience in drawing blood specimens
  • OR, any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Three years of experience in drawing blood specimens.
  • Experience in working with a student population.
