Position Summary

The Department of Emergency Medicine is recruiting a full-time Research Specialist for two distinct but related Emergency Medical Services (EMS) projects: the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN) grant and administrative assistance to EMS medical directors for a private fire district and their EMS activities.

The PECARN grant includes clinical trials and EMS research. The successful candidate will assist with the existing research team in a variety of activities relating to clinical trial research studies, including interacting with hospital staff, UA faculty, and other research staff throughout the PECARN network.

Providing assistance to EMS administrative medical directors cover a wide range of activities necessary to provide medical oversight and to ensure regulatory compliance. The successful candidate will interact with EMS providers throughout the agency, fire district leadership, hospital staff, and the EMS medical directors.

Duties & Responsibilities

PECARN-related duties include:

  • Liaison between the Principal Investigator (PI) and research stakeholders for all EMS-related projects.
  • Schedule, attend and engage in program meetings, conference calls and program debriefing on a regular and as needed basis.
  • Attend and successfully complete study trainings which may include in-person meetings or conference calls.
  • Complete required Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) training to fulfill good clinical practices requirements and any other essential biomedical research training.
  • Be familiar with and maintain ethical principles guiding the conduct of research.
  • Complete IRB documents as necessary.
  • Enter data and stay on target with deadlines established for any project.
  • Comply with site monitoring. Be sure that the site monitor has open access to all necessary source documents in advance of his/her visit.
  • Ensure protocol compliance.
  • Collaborate effectively with others to ensure progress and completion of studies.
  • Keep the PI and other research staff informed of research and administrative progress through weekly progress reports and other communications.
  • Participate in auditing visits.
  • Some travel to include in/out of state.
  • Assist the development and implementation of research projects.
  • Review research process with all involved EMS or hospital staff to ensure everyone understands their role in the research process.
  • Collect, log, and verify research data; interpret results; produce interim reports, presentations and publications; participate in the writing of scientific papers, reports, manuscripts and/or grant proposals.
  • Maintain clear and precise communication with colleagues, sponsors and others.
  • Assist in the development of grant proposals, as required.

Assistance to EMS administrative medical directors includes:

  • Review, evaluate, and ensure timely completion of EMS provider re-certification documentation by administrative medical directors.
  • Serve as a primary contact between the administrative medical directors and outside parties for any EMS agency or hospital issues.
  • Obtain follow-up documents and facilitate case review.

Facilitate the Quality Improvement process to ensure:

  • All cardiac arrest and TBI cases are reviewed and submitted to the state.
  • All ongoing EMS benchmark data is collected and reviewed.
  • Attend regularly scheduled meetings.
  • Conduct DEA audits to ensure complete and accurate records.
  • Assist with the drafting, revision, and distribution of educational material, administrative orders, administrative medical director guidelines.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of the clinical research and subject involvement.
  • Ability to effectively communicate.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of the principles of EMS systems.
  • Proficiency in MS Office.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Able to prioritize workload to meet project deadlines, internal and external.

Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND two years related research experience; OR, Six years research experience appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.
