Position Summary

Eller Information Technology, in The Eller College of Management, at The University of Arizona, is seeking a detail-oriented, self-directed candidate for the position of Systems Infrastructure Specialist. The successful candidate will be an integral part of the Operations team, and be someone who thrives on the challenge of using technology to solve new, and existing business problems in a large, and diverse IT environment. Eller IT is expanding its scope of support, and therefore looking to increase its personnel.

The Specialist will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of Eller’s server, system, and network infrastructure and will serve as the primary point of contact for the Artificial Intelligence Lab (AI Lab). The person in this role will also be directly involved in designing, and implementing new technology solutions.

Duties & Responsibilities

Systems Management

  • Responsible for the availability, performance, security and maintenance of the production and AI Lab services, systems, and the network infrastructure.
  • Maintain data recoverability; implement/maintain data backup and disaster recovery procedures.
  • Document existing and new infrastructure deployments.
  • Establish and implement system guidelines, practices, procedures and standards, assuring standards are consistent with best practices, applicable laws, regulations, and institutional policies.
  • Provide training and expertise to other team members.
  • Provide support for tier-1 (helpdesk) tickets, email, and phone requests; handle, prioritize, and follow-up on these requests to resolve issues in a timely manner.
  • Participate in 24×7 system support rotation, handle escalations, and be available to work extended and/or alternative hours as needed for system rollouts, upgrades, problem remediation, etc.
  • Attend weekly AI Lab related planning meetings and participate in providing technical advice to AI Lab grant proposals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Project Management

  • Work with AI Lab faculty, staff and researchers to assess current infrastructure, make recommendations, and deliver solutions; evaluate computer system capacity, and plan for future needs.
  • Proactively research new and/or updated technologies as they come available that pertain to the environment.
  • Implement system designs; create supporting documentation, and knowledge transfer to other Eller IT team members for troubleshooting, daily support, and maintenance.
  • Develop functional requirements through interaction with end-users.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Strong, recent working knowledge for the following technologies/services:
    • Storage Area Networks (SANs)
    • Networking: VLANs, TCP/IP, firewall, switches, routing
    • Veeam Backup and Replication
    • Patch management/deployment
    • Data center environmental management
    • Database technologies such as Microsoft SQL and MySQL/MariaDB

  • Knowledge of computer systems administration theory, principles and practices
  • Knowledge of current computer security practices and network protocols
  • Knowledge of current and emerging software and hardware technologies
  • Skill in designing, installing, configuring and maintaining computer hardware, operating and application systems and utilities including high availability systems
  • Ability to work as part of a cross-functional team
  • Ability to quickly learn new skills and technologies
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing
  • Ability to multi-task between multiple complex projects and operational requests
  • Ability to occasionally bend, squat, climb short ladders and lift 25 lbs. without assistance

Minimum Qualifications
  • Associates degree in MIS, CS, or equivalent degree or experience
  • 3+ years progressive and recent experience working directly as a systems administrator in a Windows (server 2012+) environment
  • Recent working experience for the following technologies/services:
    • Windows Server 2012/16
    • VMware and Hyper-V virtualization
    • Microsoft Active Directory administration
    • DHCP and DNS
    • File & print services
    • Group Policy Options and Preferences
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in MIS, CS, or equivalent degree or experience
  • Relevant industry certifications: MCSA, MCSE, etc
  • Linux systems administration experience
  • Experience and familiarity with the systems and network environment of The University of Arizona
