This position is responsible for installing, supporting, and maintaining the UA’s network infrastructure.

The successful candidate will be tasked with installation and configuration of network elements, with providing support necessary to ensure maximum availability, as well as with leading technology workers in executing and completing complex projects. The candidate will utilize industry best practices to provide guidance and expertise related to network, both internally and to network managers in other UA departments.

Incumbent will be responsible for participating in a 24×7 on-call for infrastructure emergencies.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Supports customer/business requirements with the planning, design and development of network infrastructure projects; evaluates existing network resources, conducts needs analysis, researches hardware and software alternatives and conducts simulations of proposed solutions.
• Analyzes requests for communications network and security systems to determine feasibility cost, equipment needs and time required. Participates in cost-benefit analysis. Implements new or upgraded systems.
• Evaluates new hardware and software for completeness and compatibility with existing systems and recommends systems for purchase. Recommends operational, policy and procedural changes.
● Operates communications network facilities, including links, routing and switching systems, security platforms and network monitoring and control facilities.
● Configures, operates and manages data center network. Works with system team to ensure proper deployment of UCS chassis and its Fabric Interconnects, top of the rack switches, and Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI).
• Maintains network infrastructure, hardware, software, services and configurations including upgrades. Proactively provides recommendations for software versions and code upgrades. Installs tests and optimizes network components and services.
• Ensures network stability and availability through the use of monitoring and reporting tools. Analyzes performance metrics to ensure optimal performance of the production network. Evaluates, selects, installs and configures new networking tools, and the associated processes and procedures necessary to ensure maximum availability.
• Maintains project documentation regarding network hardware and software installations and maintenance.
• Leads and guides technical staff on large/complex projects. Coordinates with the operations, estimators, customers and maintenance staffs on design, hardware and software matters. Interfaces with NOC personnel, technicians, network managers and IT personnel, and provides them with support and training when needed.
• Provides exceptional customer service by keeping in mind customers needs at all times, giving prompt response, consistent follow up, and fast turn-around on problem resolution.
• Acts as a Tier 3 support for trouble tickets, work orders and other escalated issues when needed.
• Participates in an on-call rotation for network and security emergencies.
• Assumes and performs other duties and responsibilities not specifically outlined herein, but which are logically and properly inherent to the position.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Knowledge and prior experience of current high-speed communications network hardware, software and protocols such as: EIGRP, BGP, HSRP, OSPF for IPv6, as well as VRF and MPLS.
• Knowledge and hands-on experience configuring and supporting networking Cisco hardware deployed in data centers such as: UCS, Fabric Interconnects, Nexus 2K, 5K, 7K switches; knowledge of Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) is a plus.
• Understanding of network monitoring and reporting tools and metrics.
• Ability to analyze network performance metrics to ensure optimal performance of the production network.
• Demonstrated experience with customer focused problem solving.
• Skill in effectively communicating technical subjects both orally and in writing.

Arizona Board of Regents Minimum Qualifications

Six years of progressively responsible experience designing, developing, and maintaining communications networks; OR, an Associate’s degree in Management Information Systems or a related field AND five years of progressively responsible experience designing, developing, and maintaining communications networks; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Communications System Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field, AND five years of experience with high speed circuit or packet switched data networks.
• 8 years of experience in fields of network design, engineering/implementation, operation, and maintenance.
• Prior experience implementing and supporting Cisco networking environment, preferably in a higher education setting.
• Current CCNA designation.
• Possesses a desire to learn and share information within a strong team environment.
