Position Summary

Mt. Graham International Observatory (MGIO) seeks candidates for the position of General Maintenance Mechanic. MGIO is a division of Steward Observatory, the research arm for the Department of Astronomy at the University of Arizona. The selected candidate shall acquire a commercial driver license.

The selected candidate must have the ability to accomplish physical labor at high elevation (11,000 feet). The work schedule is four 10-hour days per week and includes periodic participation in the maintenance team’s week long duty shift. Overtime work, including weekends, may also be required, particularly during the snow season.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provides general maintenance and repairs on heavy equipment/trucks and light vehicles.
  • Provides general maintenance and repairs on heating/cooling systems, water pumps, air compressors, generators, steam cleaners, buildings and facilities.
  • Provides preventative maintenance activities; diagnosis malfunctions and performs services on equipment.
  • Operates forklifts, graders, loaders, backhoes, dump trucks, tractor trailer rigs and maintenance support equipment.
  • Services and repairs equipment, per lubrication and repair manual.
  • Removes snow and ice from road and performs road repairs with construction equipment.
  • Maintains gas, water and electric systems. Assists in maintaining high voltage electrical transmission and distribution systems.
  • Computer skills, email and web search experience.
  • Participate in rotating on/call duty system.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience operating heavy equipment and building maintenance (such as dry wall, carpentry, electrical wiring and plumbing).
  • Possession or ability to obtain a commercial (CDL with tanker endorsement) driver’s license within six months of employment.
  • Ability to become a qualified electrical worker on medium voltage.
  • Ability to accomplish physical labor at high elevation.
  • Ability to work overtime hours as needed, including weekends.
Arizona Board of Regents Minimum Qualifications

Four years of general maintenance and repair experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education. Some positions in this classification may be required to obtain a current Arizona Type D driver’s license upon employment. Some positions in this classification may be required to obtain an Environmental Protection Agency Type 1 refrigeration license upon employment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Six years of general equipment maintenance and repair experience.
  • Four years of heavy equipment operating experience.
  • Knowledge of equipment and repair manuals.
  • Experience with: rebuilding diesel and gas engines; heavy equipment and truck repair, generator, alternator and starter repair, air compressors and vacuum pumps; equipment bodywork and painting; sandblasting; pressure washers and steam cleaners.
  • Knowledge of telephone and/or microwave systems.
  • A current CDL with tanker endorsement license is preferred
  • Knowledge of computer network systems, (windows operating and home network systems) Preferred.
  • Experience working with medium voltage.
