Position Summary

This Program Director position involves coordination and management of clinical research projects and programs in the University of Arizona Arthritis Center. The successful candidate will work closely with Dr. Kwoh and other faculty members. He/She will oversee the Clinical Research Unit and oversee the conduct of clinical research projects and programs within the University of Arizona Arthritis Center. These include a diverse set of multi-institutional grants and contracts on arthritis and musculoskeletal Diseases. He/She will also contribute to the oversight of the Arthritis Center. This individual will also be responsible for taking on a professional and efficient supervisory role, which will include interviewing, orientation, training, work assignment, mentoring, performance evaluations, and recommendations for personnel in the Clinical Research Unit, and research and administrative support personnel in the department, including the Research Nurse Manager and the Program Manager.

The selected candidate will need to confer with investigators, faculty and representatives of granting agencies concerning research needs and methods as well as take full responsibility for the preparation of the deliverables, progress reports and final reports for foundation supported and NIH-supported projects on arthritis and musculoskeletal diseases. He/She will be responsible for the preparation and submission of regulatory documents for research projects. He/she will oversee financial support personnel, and assist in managing the departmental and foundation budgets. This position requires extensive knowledge of grants and contracts budget management, IRB procedures and requirements, and NIH regulations and university fiscal management policies and procedures. It is expected that the candidate will produce work of high quality.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Supervise and manage research personnel, administrative support personnel, financial support personnel, including the Research Nurse Manager and Program Manager.
  • Fully responsible for the preparation of the deliverables, progress reports and final reports for various projects related to the Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases.
  • Assist in the management and coordination of research efforts for UAAC faculty.
  • Manage research sub-award activities.
  • Assist in the preparation and submission of research proposals.
  • Assist in the preparation of manuscripts for publication, reports, presentations and research proposals related to arthritis and musculoskeletal diseases.
  • Collaborate in the planning and design of activities in research projects.
  • Assist in the overall fiscal management of the UAAC.
  • Act as department and university liaison.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Strong skills in technical writing and editing.
  • Ability to create detailed documentation.
  • Detail oriented.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree with 5 years of research administrative related experience; OR a Bachelor’s degree with 10 years of research administrative related experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Administrative supervisory experience.
  • Experience with the management of large complex research projects.
  • Medical research background and experience with technical procedures used in research based on educational training and research experience.
  • Experience with regulatory documents and procedures for sponsored research projects.
  • Ability to multi-task and manage a large numbers of projects in a timely manner.
  • Strong interpersonal communication and team-building skills with an emphasis on interactions across research groups.
  • Ability to function as a team member through interactive contribution and fulfillment of assigned duties.
