Position Summary

The department of Steward Observatory is seeking applicants for an Optical Engineer to support and conduct the precise surface figure measurement of telescope mirrors as large as 8.4 meters in diameter.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Conduct the interferometric null test of 8.4m diameter mirrors that involves two fold spheres, two holograms, two interferometers, a point source microscope, a laser tracker and the software necessary to run the test.
  • Conduct the software configurable optical test system (SCOTS) test for 8.4m diameter mirrors.
  • Conduct the scanning pentaprism test for 8.4m diameter mirrors.
  • Conduct a software-run laser tracker and distance measurement interferometer assessment of 8.4m diameter mirrors known as laser tracker plus (LT+).
  • Determine whether test results are reliable, and then troubleshoot the test systems when the results are not reliable.
  • Assemble test equipment, bond fixtures and assess geometries using coordinate measuring machines (CMMs).
  • Facilitate repeatable processes by drafting and refining written procedures.
  • Work with administrative staff and vendors to procure necessary parts, materials, equipment and services.
  • Work varied shifts including nights and weekends to evaluate mirror surface figures when mirror production requires.
  • Additional duties may be assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Experience using interferometers, laser trackers, or CMMs.
  • Experience troubleshooting software-driven systems.
  • Experience in working with glass emphasizing care required to avoid breaking or scratching glass.
  • Experience following detailed written procedures.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work collegially and effectively as part of a team.
  • Willingness to occasionally work nights and weekends to support surface figure evaluation when the mirror production requires.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in optical engineering or related field.
  • At least 2 years experience in optical metrology relevant to evaluation of mirror surface figures.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 3+ years working in precision optical metrology.
  • Experience using MATLAB and writing MATLAB scripts.
  • Experience using interferometers; laser trackers and Spatial Analyzer; and CMMs.
  • Experience troubleshooting optical metrology systems.
  • Experience drafting detailed written procedures.
  • Familiarity with Zernike polynomials.
