Position Summary

The University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix seeks an experienced Critical Care physician to manage the medical student selective experience. This selective exposes the student to a broad experience in the care of critically ill patients.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Design the clinical, didactic, and simulation curriculum for the Critical Care Selective.
  • Assist with the critical care aspects of the simulation curriculum throughout the four years.
  • Develop clinical medical knowledge assessment tools necessary for the Critical Care Selective (e.g., NBME-type exams).
  • Evaluate and validate clinical sites for participation in the Critical Care Selective across disciplines.
  • Integrate clinical experiences at various sites with the overall clinical and didactic goals for the Critical Care Selective.
  • Help to design, implement and regularly assess the overall clinical curriculum of the College of Medicine-Phoenix.
  • Provide administrative oversight of students in the critical care selective.
  • Serve as liaison between the College of Medicine – Phoenix (COM-P) and physicians (including possible site directors) to communicate information regarding the educational program and policies.
  • Assure that all physicians who teach or assess student performance at the site are oriented to learning expectations, and to COM-P policies, including:
    • Educational Program Objectives and competencies.
    • Selective learning objectives.
    • Required clinical experiences/patient cases (including student logging expectations).
    • Duty hour policies and procedures.
    • Student performance assessment systems.
    • Attendance policies.
    • Professionalism attributes.
    • Teacher-learner contract.
  • Orient students to the critical care rotation or designates another faculty member to do so.
  • Responsible for student evaluations (both mid-rotation and end of rotation).
  • Responsible for oversight of selective experience by medical students including lectures and clinical experiences.
  • Problem solve any concerns medical students may have regarding the selective.
  • Participate in Electives Committee and Clinical Curriculum Subcommittee meetings and other meetings as needed.
  • Participate in evaluation of new experiences, new curricular considerations and new sites for the critical care selective.
  • Encourage faculty members to participate in providing educational opportunities for COM-P students.
  • Willingness to serve as an advisor to students interested in going into critical care.
  • Help, as time allows, with planning and teaching in pre-clinical curriculum.
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications
  • MD
  • Board Certified in primary care specialty at the time of appointment.
  • Licensed to practice medicine in Arizona at the time of appointment.
  • If the Individual selected for employment does NOT currently hold a faculty title with The University of Arizona College of Medicine- Phoenix; he/she will be required to obtain faculty status. This will include obtaining letters of recommendation and review by the appropriate College review committee.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience or involvement with CoM-Phoenix medical student curriculum.
