Position Summary

The part time community health educator position will be responsible for the day-to-day coordination of program activities within the partner communities and establish new relationships/partnerships with urban and reservation communities. The CHE will work with the Inter-Tribal Council of Arizona (ITCA) to reach out to tribes in Arizona as well as urban community groups, like the Tucson Indian Center and Phoenix Indian Center. The CHE will possess expertise in community engagement and health education methodologies, cultural safety, and implementing evidence-based programming. The CHE will be capable of engaging the community and medical providers/researchers in cancer outreach designed to improve cancer outcomes among the AIAN community. The CHE must be able to effectively utilize cultural competency and health communications/literacy techniques to inform the delivery of cancer information to the community. S/he will actively participate in conducting community readiness assessments for the new communities that includes data collection, analysis, reporting, and strategic planning. S/he will make significant contributions to the submission of research proposals and manuscripts. S/he will identify opportunities for collaboration among key stakeholders, assist with publications, presentations, and dissemination of research findings in communities, peer reviewed journals, at professional meetings, and other appropriate venues and develop and implement an agenda to gain new knowledge in health equity/disparities experienced by AIAN of the southwest. The CHE will also participate in the development of the cultural competency training and will assist in the promotion of and technical assistance of the small community grants.

  • This position will hold an office in Tucson.
  • This position requires extensive travel throughout Arizona and nationally on a regular basis.
  • Must have reliable transportation and flexible schedule that allows for significant travel.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Organize, plan, and attend all NACP meetings including the Summer Research Conference.
  • Engage Native communities across Arizona in NACP research, education, and training.
  • Assist in the development of the cross cultural curriculum.
  • Implement strategic planning process for communities in cancer programs.
  • Work with community partners at Tribal, urban local, state and national levels, including Health Depts., the IHS and the NCI.
  • Work with the NCI and the Arizona Cancer Center to expand the GMaP program in Arizona.

Arizona Board of Regents Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Health Education or related field AND two years of health education experience; OR, six years of health education experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree (or higher) in public health, oncology nursing, or a related field.
  • Significant experience successfully working with Native American communities with a strong knowledge of Tribal sovereignty and issues in biobanking.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of cancer and community organizing.
  • Able to productively participate in a multi-disciplinary team environment working towards common goals with internal and external partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects ensuring deadline compliance.
  • Evidence of history of success working with minimal supervision.
