Position Summary

Student Union Memorial Center is seeking a full-time Banquet Captain at Arizona Catering Company. Arizona Catering Company is the premier caterer for the University of Arizona and the Student Union Memorial Center. We provide high quality customer service for a wide range of events both on campus and off campus. The Banquet Captain position for Arizona Catering Company is an exciting and dynamic position open to anyone with previous banquet experience. Our events range from small receptions to large, upscale served meals. We work in conjunction with other Student Union Memorial Center units to ensure the success of our operations from food quality to a high level of service provided to all our guests. Our staff is comprised of over 80% students which provides a unique and ever-changing work environment. Banquet Captains are responsible for successfully executing catered events of all types, training and leading student employees to run successful events and abiding by all Student Union work standards.

The Arizona Student Unions consist of both the Student Union Memorial Center (SUMC) and the Park Student Union, as well as Highland Market and a number of convenience stores and food stops around campus. In addition to campus dining services and catering, the Arizona Student Unions also run mall scheduling, concessions at athletic events, Fast Copy & Design, the Union Galleries, Games Room, the Gallagher Theatre, a Wells Fargo, and a Post Office Contract Unit.

The Student Union Memorial Center is one of the largest student unions in the United States. The SUMC contains everything students need – restaurants, retail spaces, a bank, lounges, study/meeting rooms, a computer lab, art gallery, and a movie theater. SUMC is often referred to as the “living room” of the University. Duties & Responsibilities

Event Management:

  • Sets up banquet rooms and events as instructed and is responsible for supervising and assisting with the set-up, service and clean-up of all assigned banquet functions; sometimes multiple events in a day
  • Serves the food and/or beverage listed on the Banquet Event Order to the standards of the department and expectations of the client in a manner that ensures consistency in all banquet/catered functions
  • Ensures proper presentation and service of food and beverages
  • Works to ensure overall guest satisfaction
  • Must possess a strong collaborative spirit
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with department managers, team members, and guests


  • Supervises and assigns tasks to event assigned staff
  • Ensures safe handling of food and equipment
  • Handles customer complaints, actively resolves internal problems wherever possible, and follows through with necessary actions and effective communications
  • Any other duties assigned by the supervisor

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to occasionally lift and carry a minimum of 30 pounds
  • Ability to frequently reach, bend, lift, push, pull and/or carry while performing normal job functions

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Knowledge of the appropriate table settings and service ware
  • Knowledge of food service/banquet operations
  • Must possess ability to handle multiple tasks
  • Skills in oral and written communication
Minimum Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of the appropriate table settings and service ware and food service/banquet operations
  • Basic knowledge of food and beverage preparations, service standards, guest relations, and etiquette
  • Ability to memorize, recite, and promote the variety of menu items
  • Must have a valid driver’s license at time of employment and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.
Arizona Board of Regents Minimum Qualifications

One year of experience in food service operation; OR, any equivalent combination of experience, training, and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in similar position within an upscale environment
  • At least two years of experience in banquet operations
