Position Summary

The College of Medicine – Phoenix has 12 pre-clerkship blocks, along with four longitudinal courses that comprise the pre-clerkship curriculum. Each block is directed by a pair of accomplished educators, one a basic scientist, one a physician. This intentional pairing ensures that students receive current and critical instruction in the basic sciences as well as relevant clinical application of the material in each block. For example, basic sciences sessions centered on normal regulation of blood pressure are followed by clinical sessions centered on evaluation and management of hypertension. Within each block, each of the basic science disciplines is thoroughly covered and/or reviewed as appropriate: Anatomy/imaging/radiology, Biochemistry, Cell biology/histology, Genetics/personalized medicine, Microbiology/infectious disease, Neuroscience, Pathology, Pharmacology, Physiology.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assists in the organization of Block material.
  • Plans, prepares, and presents lecture material.
  • Plans, identifies and recruits guest lecturers.
  • Be available as a student contact for clinical / basic science questions related to Block material.
  • Reviews mid-block and end of block evaluations and provide input as to how the Block should or should not be altered for the subsequent year.
  • Reviews exam questions and student challenges to improve questions for the next year.
  • Write and review exam and practice questions, attend exam review sessions, and assist with responding to student exam question challenges.
  • Reviews cases that have been used in case-based instruction sessions to improve clinical content and to improve integration of material that students have already been exposed to.
  • Authors, or suggests potential authors for new cases that could be used in subsequent years.
  • Attends lectures during block when available.
  • Attends Block/Course/Theme meetings (BCT) if possible.
  • Participates in Case-based Instruction (CBIs) if possible.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications
  • MD or DO
  • Teaching experience in an academic environment at the undergraduate medical student level in area(s) of gastrointestinal system, endocrinology, diabetes, metabolism
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in medical school course administration.
  • Experience with multiple teaching methods including lecture, case-based instruction, simulation, independent learning modules, and team based learning in the medical school environment.
