The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) seeks a proactive and enthusiastic professional to work both independently and as part of a team as the Coordinator of External Communications.

This Position Coordinates a public communications framework for the Office of the Vice President of Agriculture, Life and Veterinary Sciences, and Cooperative Extension that fosters relationships with external stakeholders and promotes public awareness of programs strategically important to the vice president. Reporting to the director of administration and communications, the coordinator, external communications will be responsible for crafting succinct, compelling copy for correspondence and a variety of print and digital media, working within brand guidelines, using the appropriate voice and messaging for specific external audiences, including donors, community leaders, industry stakeholders and prospective students. The ideal candidate will be committed to meeting deadlines, have the emotional intelligence to work well with a variety of personality types, and be a team player who is invested in the success of the enterprise. Occasional nights, weekends, and In-state travel is required with this position.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Prepare the Vice President with talking points, slide presentations, scripts or speeches for audiences outside the enterprise.
• Create engaging social media content for the Office of the Vice President, and track reach and impact.
• Assist the Director of Administration and Communications with media relations for the Office of the Vice President. Provide media contacts with local angles on topics of strategic interest to the vice president.
• Organize public events, such as discussion panels and film screenings, to promote visibility for programs of strategic interest to the vice president. Create marketing materials related to these events.
• Develop, compile, write and edit communications, such as email messages, website content, press releases, e-newsletters, public reports, brochures or flyers; coordinate process from development through printing and distribution.
• Ensure all materials produced are of a consistent professional quality in accordance with university and college branding.
• Work with design, print and video vendors as needed to provide production support for collaterals.
• Effectively use all campus resources available to support the Office of the Vice President in meeting its external communication needs.
• Manage multiple and competing priorities to ensure timely delivery of critical projects.
• Other duties as assigned.

• Strong grammar and punctuation knowledge
• Detail oriented with strong organizational skills
• Ability to work under pressure, be flexible and meet deadlines
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook
• A high level of discretion, with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to inspire trust and respect among colleagues and all internal and external partners

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in communications, English, journalism, marketing, media relations, public relations or related field with more than 5 years of directly comparable experience; OR master’s degree or PhD/professional degree in communications, English, journalism, marketing, media relations, public relations or related field with 3 to 5 years of directly comparable experience
• Occasional nights or weekends will be required
• Occasional in-state travel will be required

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in project management
• Strong working knowledge of Drupal
• Familiarity with Google Analytics and social media scheduling programs
• Exceptional customer service and donor stewardship abilities
• Experience in event planning
• Experience with higher education initiatives
• Experience in or passion for agriculture or the life sciences
