Position Summary

The University of Arizona College of Medicine Department of Psychiatry is leading the effort to understand, diagnose, treat, and prevent psychiatric disorders, prepare future clinicians, provide state-of-the-art care, and give direction to community efforts to improve behavioral health.

William “Scott” Killgore, PhD, is a Professor of Psychiatry that joined the University of Arizona on July 1, 2014. He brings an active research program from Harvard Medical School and McLean Hospital, including his Social, Cognitive, and Affective Neuroscience Laboratory. The lab is devoted to the study of emotional functioning, sleep processes, and trauma related injuries. Dr. Killgore’s innovative work is funded by the Department of Defense, and recent research focuses on effects of prolonged sleep deprivation, stimulant countermeasures to sleepiness, mild traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder, and emotional intelligence using state of the art brain imaging technologies and neurocognitive tests.

Dr. Killgore is seeking a Study Coordinator (Program Coordinator) to coordinate an ongoing project within his lab. The selected candidate must be a highly motivated individual capable of managing complex projects and supervising research staff to achieve numerous study goals on strict timelines. This position will manage an Emotional Intelligence project for Dr. Killgore, overseeing a team of research technicians and coordinating overall lab efforts for the team. The selected candidate will oversee compliance, human subjects’ protections, annual and quarterly reporting requirements to sponsor and other entities, coordination of initial and ongoing approvals across sites, as well as organizing the training, educating, and management of project-affiliated staff, with other duties as assigned, including purchasing. Additional duties related to project-specific start-up will also be required. The selected candidate will need to be available for on-call duties, occasional weekend shifts, and/or have some flexibility in schedule. The selected candidate must also be able to travel to and from multiple research sites and must have access to reliable transportation.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Supervise, monitor, and coordinate work of study team including research assistants, postdoctoral fellows, and others; coordinate with departmental regulatory staff and lab manager.
  • Oversee day-to-day activities related to the Emotional Intelligence Study.
  • Communicate with PI and Lab Manager on a regular basis; identify problems and trends; recommend procedural changes to PI if or when there are issues with protocols.
  • Develop written operating procedures and perform quality control checks to ensure procedures are followed.
  • Manage large databases, oversee data entry, and perform regular quality assurance checks on data.
  • Analyze data and write research progress reports; draft safety and other reports as required.
  • Assist with project coordination as needed, including recruitment, phone screens, standard operating procedures (SOPs), tracking and scheduling subject visits, coordinating visits and assessments, and data entry.
  • Oversee purchasing for Emotional Intelligence study, in coordination with the Lab Manager. Assist in projecting budgets and procuring laboratory space, supplies and equipment.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory and experimental equipment; make arrangements for repairs to be performed.
  • Support the Research Administrator and Lab Manager with submission of Dr. Killgore’s grants or progress reports as needed.
  • Assist in preparation of manuscripts for publication as requested.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Experience supervising multi-person teams.
  • Excellent attention to detail and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Outstanding organizational skills and ability to maintain consistent progress across multiple aspects of project on stated timelines.
  • Experience with investigator-initiated research.
  • Ability to work independently and problem-solve.
  • Demonstrated experience with human subjects protection/Institutional Review Board (IRB) submissions.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Demonstrated excellence in maintaining positive public relations within the context of a business/lab setting.
  • Understanding of regulations and judgment in discerning risk assessments of new and ongoing research.

Bachelor’s degree in field appropriate to area of assignment AND two years of administrative/coordinative program experience; OR, six years of progressively responsible administrative coordinative program experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Availability to commit to the project for a minimum of 2-3 years.
  • Availability to work on-call or when project demands necessitate immediate attention.
