Position Summary

University Information Technology Services (UITS} is seeking an energetic, values-oriented professional to develop and lead our Academic Technologies team. The individual in this position will be responsible for leadership, development, and operational oversight of a team of academic technology professionals focused on supporting faculty, academic staff and students to support, guide and promote effective uses of educational technologies.

The Academic Technologies team provides administration and support for a variety of academic applications, including but not limited to Desire2Learn (D2L) learning management system, Course Site Request (CSR), Panopto (lecture capture), Turning Technologies, Adobe Connect, Zoom, Examity, Qualtrics, VoiceThread and Adobe Experience Manager.

The Academic Technologies team works closely with the Office of Instructional Assessment (OIA) and the Office of Digital Learning (ODL) to seek out the best emerging academic technologies, and maintains a close relationship with the Classroom Technology Services team to assure all classroom technology is fully implemented and supported.

This position will report to the Executive Director for Student and Academic Technologies.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Collaboratively establish the strategic vision, goals and priorities for the Academic Technologies Team with the Executive Director of Student and Academic Technologies and in alignment with UITS Strategic priorities.
• Establish project plans and work teams to implement strategic priorities.
• Works collaboratively with OIA and ODL to develop, maintain, and manage a comprehensive plan that provides the campus with academic technology that is scalable, user friendly, and effective.
• Reviews all project requests to determine if the projects fall within the Academic Technologies team’s scope and capacity.
• Coordinates with other IT groups on all initiatives to assure smooth approvals, funding, implementation, and support.
• Locates and shares academic technology resources including seminars, conferences, classes, and information regarding other colleges’ practices
• Oversees the design, delivery, evolution, and operations of enterprise technologies that support teaching and learning. Develops work plans, sets priorities, and oversees activities of the Academic Technologies team.
• Working closely with OIA and ODL, works with key faculty committees and groups on developing education technology strategies and priorities.
• Engages students in meaningful ways to understand their needs and uses of academic IT services.
• Designs data collection methods to determine needs of student body, faculty and academic support staff.
• Develops strong working relationships with colleagues and/or project team and customers to effectively complete team goals and objectives.
• Communicates effectively with administrators, faculty, academic staff, and students
• Oversees work activities to ensure on-time completion of assignments and best utilization of skills and knowledge
• Recruits and hires qualified employees; defines roles and responsibilities for employees; proactively assesses and adjusts team composition and job duties as needs change.
• Provides coaching and development. Works with and develops direct reports to support skill development and career progression. Ensures employees possess the knowledge, skills and abilities to support Academic Technologies.
• Ensures staff receive adequate support to achieve desired outcomes.
• Develops and builds on skill sets that work towards the goals of the Student and Academic Technologies units.
• Identifies and uses appropriate resources to accomplish tasks and build individual and team knowledge; considers impact to others and current processes prior to taking action.
• Promotes open communication and transparency in a manner that builds relationships and trust.
• Understands services, develops metrics, key performance indicators, and provides continuous improvement and service life-cycle.
• Participates in the oversight of department budget and other resources .
•Conducts research on emerging products, services, protocols, and standards in academic technologies.
•Represents the Academic Technologies team at various business meetings, committees, and task forces; promotes existing and new programs and/or policies.
• Promotes values, services and support of the Academic Technologies team to the greater campus.
• Negotiates working agreements, represents Academic Technologies team’s interests and coordinates operations with other organizational entities, vendors and clients.

• Adept at learning new technology quickly and transferring this knowledge to others.

• Skill in managing projects.
• Strong knowledge and experience in applying the principles, practices and techniques of providing computing services in an academic environment.
• Knowledge of budgeting, cost estimating and fiscal management principles and procedures.

Seven years of progressively responsible information technology experience including one year of supervisory experience; OR, Bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems or a related field AND four years of information technology experience which includes one year of supervisory experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in an academic environment.
• Experience managing academic technologies in a higher education institution.
• Self-motivated, proactive, independent, and responsive.
