Position Summary

The University of Arizona invites nominations and applicants for the position of Assistant Dean, Clinical Relations and Outreach for the newly created College of Veterinary Medicine. The Assistant Dean for Clinical Relations and Outreach provides strategic leadership and promotes excellence in all phases of the off-campus clinical rotations of clinical year students, and coordinates policy on student outcomes assessment in clinical sites. The Assistant Dean shall be the administrative head for liaising with Clinical Affiliates (Clinical Site Preceptors) involved in curriculum delivery. The Assistant Dean shall facilitate the recruitment, training and professional development of Clinical Site Preceptors and supervise the implementation of the plans and decisions of the University. The Assistant Dean for Clinical Relations and Outreach will participate in outreach efforts to the profession including University of Arizona-CVM sponsored events and local and national professional conferences. Additionally, the Assistant Dean for Clinical Relations and Outreach will participate in coordinating and delivering the professional skills curriculum once fully implemented.

Set in the beautiful Tucson valley, the UA College of Veterinary Medicine is being designed as a 3 calendar year, competency-based curriculum, educating a new generation of veterinarians to serve the state of AZ and its citizens. The UA Oro Valley campus is the administrative and preclinical training headquarters for the program, with multiple facilities in the Tucson metro area utilized for clinical and professional skills development during the first two years of training. The third clinical year will utilize a hybrid distributive model to provide students a wide variety of clinical settings where students work alongside practicing veterinarians. These settings include those at the university, as well as in private practice, industry, and public health. Research emphases within the College of Veterinary Medicine will align and integrate with the extensive network of University of Arizona research programs focusing on animal and human health, agriculture, biomedical engineering, and bioinformatics. When the University of Arizona launches the state’s first public veterinary medical education program, it will offer a unique education model that reduces costs, speeds time to graduation, and prepares competent veterinarians for immediate entry into private and public sectors of the workforce upon graduation.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Represent and promote the mission of the University and CVM to all faculty, staff, students and to the community at large;
• Collaborate and foster working relationships with external partners and stakeholders to attain CVM and University goals and objectives;
• Lead efforts to recruit and maintain partnership agreements with Clinical Affiliates and other partners involved in clinical year curriculum delivery;
• Serve as a change-agent and provide leadership to assess and streamline CVM policies and procedures as related to clinical faculty recruitment;
• Provide oversight for implementation of initiatives that strengthen and fulfill the CVM mission;
• Supervise the planning, ordination, delivery, and evaluation of designated clinical rotation courses;
• Assure student learning outcomes are achieved and measurable in both qualitative and quantitative metrics in the hybrid distributed clinical education model;
• Promote effective working relationships among faculty, staff and students;
• Support clinical faculty growth and development in teaching, scholarship, and professional activities;
• Contribute to the annual budget process and manage daily operations of assigned programs to remain within budgetary expectations and work to improve operating margins;
• Recommend programs for the development and enrichment of unit personnel;
• Evaluate personnel performance and recommend personnel actions pertaining to the recruitment, promotion, retention and/or dismissal;
• Conduct regularly scheduled meetings of personnel assigned to the Clinical Relations and Outreach section and maintain meeting summaries;
• Serve as a member of the CVM Dean’s Council; serve as a member on other College and University committees as appropriate;
• Complete required institutional, program accreditation, and other reports necessary for the operation and advancement of University programs, both on campus and at extended campus sites; and
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
• Demonstrated ability to complete multiple assignments, meet deadlines and exercise independent judgement;
• Excellent organizational, managerial, presentation and interpersonal skills and reporting;
• Excellent conceptual, analytical, strategic planning and problem solving skills;
• Demonstrated experience successfully working with diverse veterinarians, faculty and student populations;
• Highly self-motivated with strong work ethic;
• Resourceful and innovative.

Minimum Qualifications

DVM or equivalent from an AVMA-accredited institution;
• 10 years experience in clinical veterinary practice;
• Working knowledge of information systems and databases;
• Understanding of the challenges facing the veterinary profession and veterinary education.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in establishing successful partnerships between veterinary colleges, veterinary students and practicing veterinary clinicians;
• 5 years experience as private practice owner;
• Veterinary organizational leadership experience at the national, state, and/or local levels;
• Understanding of veterinary communities and agricultural industries in Arizona;
• Understanding of the academic environment;
• Understanding of active learning methodologies;
• Exposure to clinical teaching and veterinary student related issues.
