The University of Arizona’s College of Agriculture & Life Sciences (CALS) is seeking enthusiastic candidates for the position of Senior Academic Advisor I in the Office of Career and Academic Services (CAS). The Senior Academic Advisor I will advise students in all CALS majors on college policies and procedures, general education requirements, students seeking major exploration within CALS, students on academic probation and other cohorts. The advisor will assist with new student orientations, peer mentor program, success courses, workshops, first generation student programming and other college wide programs. The position will report to the CALS Senior Director of Advising and Student Services and will work closely with all CALS departments, CALS academic advisors and CAS staff.
The College offers 17 distinct undergraduate majors across ten academic units so effective and engaging communication regarding the breadth of college offerings and possible career paths is essential to the position. The successful candidate will work in a fast-paced environment and must consistently demonstrate creativity, flexibility, initiative and effective teamwork.

Academic Advisors serve as frontline contact for undergraduate students in providing developmental academic advising to drive engagement and empower students to achieve their academic and career goals. An advisor builds a formative relationship with students by interpreting information, and providing clarification on procedures and academic requirements of specific programs or majors. Academic Advisors have the authority to approve students’ academic degree programs, including evaluating transfer credit and making exceptions to the program requirements under the auspices of their respective faculty. In addition, Advisors play a vital role in maximizing undergraduate retention.

Duties & Responsibilities

General Advising
• Assess individual students’ stage of development (academic and career) and promotes their growth by determining suitable developmental tasks
• Advise students on matters ranging from developing academic plans to academic policy, career options and student engagement opportunities.
• Refer students to appropriate departmental offices, faculty, and support services for help with academic, personal, and career counseling, academic skills development, and financial aid support.
• Evaluate use of transfer credit and determine whether or not degree requirements have been met
• Support students in establishing realistic and attainable academic and career goals
• Assist undergraduate students in determining educational plans, choosing courses, and exploring majors, minors, and career options
• Identify educational and career options appropriate for each student and assist student with evaluating each option, including possible outcomes and their implications
• Counsel students on options to satisfy degree requirements
• Monitor students’ academic progress, determine satisfactory progress toward degree, and assist students in completion
• Identify current and potential needs or problem areas (ex. Study skills, tutoring)
• Advise students with academic difficulty on development of an academic action plan, and refer students to appropriate campus resources for assistance as needed
• Using University systems, maintain student files, records, and advisor’s notes
• Maintain knowledge of regulations and policies that impact students’ educational options
• Other duties as assigned (typically less than 5% of time)

The Senior Academic Advisor I is responsible for the development of a special advising program.

• Coordinates a special program (including but not limited to academic success, first year experiences, success courses, peer advising, mentoring, internships, new student orientations, student office assistants or college honors programs, etc.)
• Serves as program liaison with campus and community partners including faculty
• Provides input on materials and/or curriculum in collaboration with faculty
• Routinely organize, manage and report input regarding student data related to enrollment and retention information to Senior Director of Advising and Student Services and Associate Dean
• Assist with coordination of prospective and current student communication plans
• Develops solutions to complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires in-depth evaluation of variables.
• Determines best method to achieve results and may make suggestions to improve policies and procedures.
• Work is performed without appreciable direction. Exercises considerable latitude in determining objectives and approaches to assignments.
• Teach success related courses to CALS students

• Knowledge of advising practices and principles
• Knowledge of other colleges and the University as a whole
• Knowledge required to work with specialized groups of the student body
• Knowledge of campus resources and student engagement opportunities
• Knowledge of programs available in CALS including college-specific policies and procedures
• Knowledge of university policies and procedures
• Utilizes University systems advisor tools with excellent proficiency (advanced analytics and reviewing data)
• Ability to mentor and share knowledge with junior advisors
• Ability to provide input regarding student data (such as enrollment and retention information)
• Capable of building and presenting academic program information with other senior academic advisors

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in related field and four years or more of experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience, training, and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in a field related to higher education, counseling, CALS fields, or comparable subjects (completed or in progress)
• Familiarity with CALS academic programs (majors, minors, certificates)
• Demonstrated knowledge of and successful experience in providing academic advising or in teaching/counseling in higher education
• Demonstrated excellent communication and presentation skills and proactive, open and responsive interpersonal skills
• Effective organization skills
• Evidence of collaborative work with others
• Proficiency with University of Arizona Student Management System (UAccess)
• Experience using UAccess Analytics
• Experience with other colleges and the University as a whole
• Experience working with specialized groups of the student body
• Demonstrated successful experience working with postsecondary students
