Position Summary

Mt. Graham International Observatory (MGIO) is seeking a responsible individual as the driver and assistant to the Summer Crew Supervisor. The successful candidate will be responsible to assist the efficient and productive work effort of twelve to fourteen (12/14) high school students during roadside clean up, painting, and other duties as assigned. This position will report to the MGIO Site Manager. In addition, this person will drive a fifteen (15)-passenger van to transport students from the San Carlos area and the Bylas area to the MGIO Base Camp (additional travel up Mt. Graham will be done as needed).

The Summer Program at the MGIO Base Camp begins June 4, 2018 and ends on July 26, 2018. The program runs every year for 8 weeks at a time during the summer. This is a short duration position. Vacancies may be available for future summers.
The Driver’s work hours are four 10-hour days – Monday through Thursday (with a 30-minute lunch period). Actual hours will depend on the driver’s place of residence. Transportation will be provided from one location in San Carlos and one location in Bylas. The van is provided by the University of Arizona. The selected candidate will be responsible for the operation and minor preventive maintenance of this vehicle. A daily walk around the vehicle will be performed and recorded.

Upon hire: The successful candidate must attend an HOV classroom training session, AND successfully complete a behind-the-wheel road test conducted by Risk Management Services or other authorized observer.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Operates a fifteen (15)-passenger van.
• Performs minor maintenance, such as minor preventative maintenance of the van, such as a daily walk around check, fluid checks, and ability to change a flat tire.
• Transports students to and from the MGIO Base Camp from designated pick up locations.
• Assist Supervisor with 12/14 high school student workers.
• Schedules work and assigns priorities of tasks.
• Oversees the work effort and ensures safe work practices.
• Maintains inventory of tools and materials.
• Additional duties as assigned.
