Position Summary

Facilities Management at the University of Arizona is looking to fill an HVAC Mechanic position. The successful candidate will install, maintain, repair, and overhaul HVAC air handling and exhaust systems, air compressors, vacuum pumps, evaporative coolers, pumps and other mechanical equipment. Working conditions include but are not limited to restricted movement, extreme temperatures, intense noise, hazardous materials, wet locations, hazardous working locations, and lifting and/or carrying heavy objects. This is a journey level position.

NOTE: All maintenance employees are required to drive University vehicles on a daily basis as one of their primary job functions.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Troubleshoots, repairs and overhauls equipment such as air
    handlers, exhaust fans, pumps, evaporative coolers, cooling towers, air compressors, vacuum pumps, bearings, electric motors, and other environmental changing devices and other mechanical equipment or electrical components.
  • Installs, maintains or repairs air handlers, fan coils, exhaust fans, air compressors, pumps, vacuum pumps, evaporative coolers, belts, bearings, sheaves, and other ventilation and air conditioning equipment.
  • Installs and replaces all types of HVAC equipment according to prints, specifications, diagrams or other instructions.
  • Reads gauges and instructions and adjusts mechanisms such as valves, controls and pumps to control level of fluid pressure and system’s distribution.
  • Tests malfunctioning systems and components using electrical, mechanical, and digital controls.
  • Maintains cooling towers, water treatment and tower distribution system.
  • Prepares estimates for repairs and installation of equipment.
  • Performs planned maintenance, regular servicing and repairs of heating and refrigeration equipment of all types, sizes and temperature ranges.
  • Coordinates work schedules with other shops and departments to keep inconvenience to a minimum.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications
  • Valid Arizona driver’s license upon employment.
  • At least two years of licensed driving experience.
Arizona Board of Regents Minimum Qualifications

Six years of progressively responsible HVAC or refrigeration equipment installation, maintenance and repair experience; OR, Completion of a four year federally approved technical training program in the installation, repair and maintenance of HVAC or refrigeration equipment; OR, any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education. Some positions in this classification may require Chloroflourocarbons Certification upon employment. Some positions in this classification may require a current Arizona driver’s license upon employment.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with:

  • Chilled water /hot water air handling systems and evaporative coolers
  • Exhaust fans
  • Air compressors and vacuum pumps
  • Pumps of all types

Ability to communicate in a friendly, professional manner and work in a team environment with outstanding customer service skills.
