Position Summary

The Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Arizona (UA) is seeking a postdoctoral research scholar in multi-physics modeling of flow in porous media. The successful candidate will work with Dr. Bo Guo, an assistant professor.

Duties & Responsibilities

Develop and/or improve hybrid multiscale models for fluid flow in geological formations with applications to geological CO2 storage and underground storage of methane.
Develop and/or improve pore-scale models for gas transport in organic-rich shale.
Publish peer-reviewed journal articles.
Utilize images of shale samples and microfluidic experimental data for improving understanding of transport and multiphase flow processes in organic-rich shale.
Work with graduate students to apply the multiscale models for realistic geological sites for CO2 and methane storage.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications

• A PhD in hydrogeology, petroleum engineering, civil engineering, applied mathematics, and related fields.
Strong insight into physical processes relevant for subsurface energy and environmental challenges (e.g., extraction of unconventional oil/gas resources, geologic carbon storage, and protection of groundwater aquifers).
Strong background and interest in computational physics for fluid flow in porous materials.
Expertise in C++ programming and parallel computing.
Demonstrated record of productivity in developing computer models.
Familiarity with the open source simulator for fluid dynamics OpenFOAM.
