Position Summary

The Office of International Education, a unit within the division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management | Academic Initiatives & Student Success seeks a Program Director for Programs and Outreach, Africa to support the Vice Provost for International Education on a wide range of educational and research initiatives in Africa. The Program Director will work closely with the Vice Provost for International Education, the Deans of various colleges and others when appropriate, to develop and implement strategic initiatives for the growth of the University of Arizona’s presence in Africa and the growth of African student populations at existing and new educational programs at the University of Arizona. The position is based in Tucson, AZ but will require extended stays in various locations in Africa. As a newly established and growing office, the Office of International Education will have many needs and, at least for the initial startup phase, relatively few staff. The Program Director will be expected to help out with other activities and initiatives of the Office as requested by the Vice Provost. Work may include evening and weekend hours.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Assist in the development and implementation of Africa-related educational initiatives, research and programs, including but not limited to dual degree programs with African universities.
• Assist in overseeing UA programs in Africa, including overseeing UA locations in Africa.
• Assist with the strategic development of new UA programs in Africa, including Early College Programs in high schools, intensive English language programs and other short-term educational programs.
• Lead the development and growth of UA student recruitment efforts in Africa in coordination with the International Admissions Office.
• Represent the UA at meetings, seminars, and other events in the Africa, acting as spokesperson as appropriate.
• Contribute to effective communication and reporting on the UA’s activities in Africa, within the UA and externally (e.g. through writing activity reports, contributing to UA newsletters, website, e-mail bulletins, etc.).
• Perform funding and administration activities such as:
- Drafting of project reports
– Monitoring project expenditures
- Assisting in preparing estimates for budgeted activities and funding proposals
- Undertaking monitoring and evaluation tasks
- Maintaining and regularly updating a list of UA contacts and programs in Africa
• Assist, in appropriate circumstances and in coordination with the Office of General Counsel, with the assessment of legal risks and regulations related to UA activities, programs, and locations in Africa.
• Represent the UA in a positive and engaging manner to ensure positive working relationships with all key stakeholders in Africa, including partner universities, students, potential applicants, program staff, government institutions and ministries, and the broader public.

Minimum Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in related field
• Deep familiarity with Africa
• Demonstrated program management experience in an international setting
• High level of integrity and accountability
• Excellent organizational skills
• Demonstrated professionalism
• Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills
• Diligence, independence, and an ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines concurrently.
• Strong spoken and written communication skills
