Position Summary

The Precision Instrumentation Group in the College of Optical Sciences at the University of Arizona invite applications for a full time Research Engineer. Research in the Precision Instrumentation Group focuses on real-world challenges where novel solutions can be offered, particularly in areas like standards-level metrology, high precision positioning systems, bio-instrumentation, optical metrology, and advanced manufacturing. The Precision Instrumentation Group focuses on performing the multidisciplinary system design, building prototype systems, qualifying technology, and, finally, spinning off technology so that it can be commercialized and launched into industry. The diverse research areas covered by the Precision Instrumentation Group requires candidates with interests in several of the following:

  • Optomechanical system design, analysis, alignment, testing, and delivery.
  • Optical design, freeform optics design, design for manufacturing & metrology.
  • Analysis of complex instruments crossing mechanical, optical, and electrical engineering disciplines.
  • Additive/subtractive fabrication processes for optical materials, metals, and ceramics.
  • Instrumentation, metrology, and precision engineering.
  • Candidates with experience working with complimentary disciplines will also be considered.

    Duties & Responsibilities

    We seek an individual who wants to work with a diverse group of students, faculty, and colleagues. Candidates must have a strong research track record and the ability support several research programs simultaneously. Candidates are expected augment the research capabilities and infrastructure in the Precision Instrumentation Group. The position requires supporting the research activities in the group including supervising students and staff within the group, managing laboratory facilities, project management, disseminating research through journal articles and conference presentations, and supporting proposal preparation.

    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
    Minimum Qualifications
  • MS in Optics, Physical Sciences, or Engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience with designing, building, and qualifying instrumentation.
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD in Optics, Physical Sciences, or Engineering.
  • Has a strong track record of publishing.
  • Experience with CAD Modeling (SolidWorks, Pro/E, Siemans NX, etc.).
  • Experience with optical design software (Zemax, Code V, LightTools, FRED, etc.).
  • Experience with finite element analysis software (ANSYS, COMSOL, Nastran, etc.).
