The position is for an Environmental Microbiology Research Specialist with at least 2 years of analytical laboratory research experience and a B.S. degree in Microbiology, or Environmental Science with a microbiology focus. The incumbent will be responsible for microbial and chemical analyses of soil samples, data management and statistical analysis. The position includes assistance with lab management and also field work that requires being out of town for up to a week at a time.

Duties & Responsibilities

An Environmental Microbiology research specialist position is available for a scientist with a B.S. in Environmental Science or Microbiology. The incumbent will be assisting with projects focused on plant/microbe interactions and the relevance of soil health to mine waste reclamation, degraded-land restoration and agricultural productivity. The research evaluates impacts of microbial diversity and functional capacity on soil health. The research socialist will be responsible for assisting with and supervising sample collection from a variety of field sites followed by microbial and chemical analysis of soils sampled. The incumbent must have microbiology and molecular biology skills as well as basic analytical chemistry skills. Preference will be given to candidates with strong molecular biology skills including nucleic acid extraction, traditional and quantitative PCR and bioinformatics training. Data analysis skills must include competency with software for spreadsheet management, graphing, and statistical analysis (i.e. Excel, SigmaPlot, Adobe Design, and SAS JMP). Applicants should also demonstrate experience with research presentations at scientific meetings. Experience in field sampling and training for work on hazardous field sites is desirable and the incumbent must be available to travel out of town to assist with field sampling for up to a week at a time.

Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND two years related research experience; OR, Six years research experience appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications

B.S. in Environmental Microbiology
2 years laboratory research experience
Field research experience
Skill with data management and statistical analysis
Molecular biology experience including nucleic acid extraction and qPCR
Candidate will be expected to have a valid driver’s license
Experience presenting research at scientific meetings
Bioinformatics (i.e. analysis of sequence data sets)
MSHA training
