Position Summary

The Department of Internal Medicine at the College of Medicine – Phoenix is seeking a Clinical Research Manager for the administration and oversight of the clinical research portfolio. The incumbent will report to the Senior Director of Clinical Research Operations and provide day to day operational and supervisory support for multiple clinical trials to ensure successful implementation of and adherence to the clinical research protocol and national and local milestones regarding planning, administration, timeline management, scheduling of coordinators, enrollment, participant engagement, data collection, and reporting. This position will manage coordination and administration of IRB and department approved research studies, including grant funded and industry sponsored studies.

The selected individuals will work closely with UA and Banner Health colleagues, as well as adherence to enrollment metrics and milestones, and training and supervision of clinical research coordinator staff who are involved in enrollment, informed consent, study procedures, data collection and documentation, and interactions with the study team and clinical partners.

The Clinical Research Manager will demonstrate competence and leadership in clinical research skills, problem solving, priority setting and serve as a resource for others for all aspects of conducting multicenter studies. Intermittent travel to investigator meetings may be required.

This individual will also participate in the design, development, and implementation of investigator initiated clinical research as well as overseeing quality assurance, maintenance of research databases and other clinical data management systems, proper documentation and reporting.

Duties & Responsibilities

Personnel Management:

  • Direct and supervise the activity of research personnel and data managers involved in clinical trial activities.
  • Provide daily supervision of research personnel and support staff. Perform personnel activities including recruitment, assigning work, training, administering performance appraisals and providing discipline.
  • Provide career development guidance to research personnel and support staff coaches and mentors staff to build knowledge and skills creates learning opportunities for employees.
  • Coordinate continuing education opportunities for clinical research support staff.
  • Make job requirements and goals for each position clear to employees and provide sufficient training to achieve the desired level of competency document evidence of competence on a continuing basis.
  • Review timeliness, accuracy, availability and security of information.

Strategic Planning:

  • Participate in new clinical trial protocol critique and development.
  • Assess feasibility of implementation (resource allocation as well as clinical preparation).
  • Serve as a key resource to research participants and collaborators (referring institutions).
  • Expand knowledge base and remain abreast of new research developments by attending continuing education meetings, lectures, training sessions and conferences. Implement this knowledge into the appropriate division/department within COM-P. Continuously update knowledge of regulatory issues regarding the conduct of clinical studies.
  • Represent Division on hospital-wide councils/committees/working groups.

Process Improvement:

  • Coordinate real-time preparation for sponsor monitoring, regulatory agency audits, and accreditation surveys initiate corrective action, if needed.
  • Provide a leadership role in developing and coordinating departmental policies and procedures to ensure the efficient operation of both clinical trials and patient care in a clinical setting.

Clinical Research Operation Management:

  • Provide day to day oversight of the clinical research activities within outpatient clinic, and inpatient visits, including management of nursing staff, lab processors, nurses, and medical assistants.
  • Assure that department specific standard operating procedures are up-to-date and compliant with hospital and accrediting institutions for all areas.


  • Assist with IRB and amendments submission, changes or corrections to protocols/and or consent forms.
  • Work with PI, sponsoring agencies, Administrators, and College Administration.
  • Work with Medicine Administration Department and University Research Administration to submit and revise Confidentiality Agreements and Clinical Trial Agreements as needed.
  • Assist in setting up regulatory documents, shadow file systems, databases, screening logs, adverse experience reporting mechanism, and regulatory binders.
  • Determine with program principal investigators staffing requirements, and coordinate appropriate coverage for all programs.
  • Create and oversee orientation and program training for new clinical research personnel.
  • Work with the Program/Laboratory Directors and Administrator to communicate goals to all research personnel.
  • Design, implement and revise activities of the research group to meet the above-mentioned goals.

  • Strong ability to organize, prioritize, and coordinate multiple activities to meet deadlines.
  • Leadership qualities and experience as an administrator.
  • Motivated to provide high quality, compliant research.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in a scientific field of study.
  • Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
  • Ability to adapt work schedule to meet the demands of the position, possibly including nights and/or weekends.
  • Analytical ability sufficient to evaluate data, make judgments and recommendations.
  • Experience with research protocols, development, regulations.
  • Knowledge of IRB and policies and procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified Clinical Research Coordinator (CCRC).
  • Research Nurse certification.
  • Master’s degree in relevant field.
  • Proficiency with information systems and experience investigating costs related to clinical research trials.
