Position Summary

The Laboratory Coordinator, Senior will oversee and coordinate the operational activities in a teaching laboratory, ensuring that experiments and demonstrations are set up and functioning properly and that graduate teaching assistants know how to run the experiments. The selected candidate will also develop and recommend new experiments and demonstrations, and supervise Graduate Teaching Assistants, as assigned.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Plan, supervise and assist in the set-up of laboratory experiments including assembling equipment, selecting and/or preparing reagents and solutions.
  • Supervise and assist in the disassembling of laboratory experiments.
  • Supervise, schedule and train teaching assistants for the laboratories; answer questions concerning experiments and train on equipment usage.
  • Develop and implement schedule of experiments and demonstrations for semester’s courses.
  • Plan and monitor an annual budget for laboratory and lecture theater operation.
  • Develop, test, modify and/or recommend experiment lecture demonstrations and techniques to modifications to better meet course objectives.
  • Write or rewrite laboratory and lecture demonstration instructions to assist faculty, teaching assistants and students.
  • Inventory, requisition and restock supplies for the laboratories and lecture theaters.
  • Perform electronic and mechanical repairs and calibrations on equipment or contact appropriate party to perform repairs.
  • Recommend new equipment for the laboratory and lecture theaters.
  • Compile statistics such as laboratory and lecture theater utilization figures.
  • Monitor projects with regard to progress and cost.
  • Develop microcomputer programs to computerize laboratory records, and for use in lectures and laboratory work.
  • Assist in design for construction of new or modifications of existing facilities.
  • Coordinate audiovisual, computer and tutorial facilities and materials.

  • Knowledge of computerized or automated systems.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of laboratory operation.
  • Skill in supervising and coordinating the work of others.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with others.

Master’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND two years related laboratory experience; OR, bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND three years related laboratory experience; OR, seven years of related laboratory experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Background in Physiology.
  • Graduate Teaching Experience.
  • Experience in laboratory management or coordination of a lab class.
