Position Summary

The program coordinator position will assist with the management and coordination of the activities of the Maricopa County Horticulture Program. The incumbent will work under the supervision of the Urban Horticulture agent and Master Gardener Program Coordinator, Senior to ensure that goals and objectives are accomplished in accordance with established program policies and procedures. This position will organize and manage program events and fundraising initiatives and well as training and education opportunities for both program and community members.

This benefits-eligible position is located in Phoenix, Arizona. The position will start at 0.75 FTE but will be reduced to 0.50 FTE after the Urban Horticulture Agent position is filled.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Recruit, train, coordinate, monitor and supervise the activities of Maricopa County Master Gardener Volunteers.
  • Develop and implement new or revised program goals and objectives.
  • Develop and schedule program work plan in accordance with specifications and funding limitations; oversee daily operations and coordinate activities of program; determine priorities.
  • Monitor and approve program expenditures ensuring that budget allocations are not overspent.
  • Confer with and advise staff, volunteers and others to provide technical advice, problem solving assistance, answer to questions and program goals and policy interpretation; refer to appropriate department person when unable to respond.
  • Coordinate activities of the Master Gardener program with interrelated activities of other programs, departments or staff to ensure optimum efficiency and compliance with appropriate policies, procedures and specifications.
  • Prepare periodic reports, financial statements and records on program activities, progress, status or other special reports for management or outside agencies.
  • Evaluate program effectiveness to develop improved methods; devise evaluation methodology and implements; analyzes results and recommend and/or take appropriate action.
  • Review applications and other program documents independently or in conjunction with supervisor to determine acceptance of applicants and other necessary program related decisions.
  • Recruit program participants, members and volunteers utilizing most appropriate promotional or marketing methods, such as individual letters, brochures or presentations at meetings.
  • Develop, compile and write communications and promotional literature for distribution such as newsletters, brochures or flyers; coordinate process from development through printing and distribution.
  • Develop and facilitate workshops, meetings or conferences; coordinate logistics, scheduling and participant communications.
  • Interact and maintain liaison with volunteers, faculty, staff and outside/community agencies in facilitating program objectives.
  • Supervise the horticulture help desks and hotlines at the main office and satellites.

Arizona Board of Regents Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in field appropriate to area of assignment AND two years administrative/coordinative program experience; OR, Six years of progressively responsible administrative coordinative program experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.
