The University of Arizona, Department of Medicine Business Office is accepting applications for a Senior Accountant to join our team in an exciting, fast-paced environment.

The Department of Medicine develops and delivers cutting-edge medical research, high-quality education and unsurpassed patient care. As the largest department in the UA College of Medicine, the overall objective of the Business Office is to provide excellent operational and financial management support to the 18 divisions and more than 150 faculty members within the Department of Medicine (DOM).

The Senior Accountant position will play an important role in managing faculty and staff funding plans, reviewing and approving financial transactions, monitoring budgets, reconciling data, producing financial reports, and managing accounts for assigned Divisions. This position requires great attention to detail, the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and a working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles. The Senior Accountant position is a key contributor to the success of the Department of Medicine’s Business Office team and its mission.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Utilize UAccess to review, approve, and monitor account transactions, budgets, and account balances for appropriate spending and compliance with various agency’s policies and regulations in addition to UA policies and regulations. Provide explanations and recommendations for operational budget variances. In addition to approving reconciled P-Card transactions.
  • Monitor and approve grant and contract expenditures and ensure alignment with contract budget and scope of work as determined by the sponsor. Prepare financial reports for sponsors, PI and Division Chief.
  • Monthly reconciliation of all Division revenue and expenditures to University and UA Foundation systems through UAccess Analytics.
  • Utilize internal Database to monitor payroll expenditures to budget; cost share reporting, and close-out/concurrence reporting.
  • Ensure UAccess Employee payroll records align with DOM database payroll tables, verify and monitor internal and external commitments, and create new funding plans when there are funding changes.
  • Prepare position distribution changes in UAccess Employee, and generate incentive and call-pay payment requests in UAccess Employee.
  • Investigate accounting discrepancies and identify solutions.
  • Request General Error Corrections (GECs) and Salary Expense Transfers (SETs) as necessary to move expenses to appropriate account or object code.
  • Review and reconcile personnel and operations transactions in DOM database.
  • Provide financial information/reports for DOM Division Managers and Principal Investigators (PIs).
  • Assist Division Managers to prepare budgets, cost projections and financial analyses.
  • Operationalize contracts and agreements with regard to generation and payment of invoices.
  • Assist administration and Division Manager with annual UA All Funds Budget, UA Budget Rollover, and Departmental Fiscal Year End processes.
  • Assist administration with special projects.
  • There may be additional duties assigned as it relates to this position.

Arizona Board of Regents Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting AND three years of professional accounting experience; OR, Seven years progressively responsible and diverse accounting experience and coursework which included at least three years professional accounting in which a broad exposure to all areas of accounting and accounting principles, practices and procedures was acquired; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications
  • At least two years working knowledge and experience interpreting University and UA Foundation policies and procedures and their systems: UAccess Employee, UAccess Analytics, UAccess Financials, and Raiser’s Edge.
  • At least two years of experience in reconciling state, discretionary, sponsored, and gift accounts.
  • At least two years of post-award grants management.
  • Excellent communication, time management, organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to multi-task projects and daily assignments, take initiative, and be self-motivated. Must be able to work well in a team environment.
  • At least two years of experience using MS Office Excel, Access, Word, and Outlook.
  • In-depth knowledge of accounting practices, procedures, and generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Desire and ability to work in a fast pace environment with changing demands.
