Position Summary

Reporting to the Executive Director for Research Technologies, the Assistant Director for Research Computing oversees and manages the University’s Research Computing team within the University Information Technology Services (UITS) division. The Assistant Director leads and manages Research Computing, which includes the University’s High-Performance Computing Infrastructure, as well as HPC consulting, statistical consulting, and visualization consulting.

This position works collaboratively with the campus research community to develop future requirements and vision for research computing, to determine the most effective manner for delivering consulting and support services to researchers, and to ensure that the vision and support services are implemented effectively. The assistant director manages 10 full-time staff.

Duties & Responsibilities

•Lead and manage UA Research Computing
•Establish operational objectives and priorities for delivery of research computing services and support
•Establish success metrics for research computing services and support
•Promote awareness of research computing services to UA researchers and the UA research community
•Foster and facilitate interdisciplinary computational research activities
•Coordinate the acquisition, installation, and maintenance of research computing software and hardware
•Oversee HPC refresh process
•Remain current and foster awareness of state-of-the-art research computing software and hardware
•Monitor HPC computing user environments and work with HPC Systems team to identify and resolve system problems
•Participate in NSF XSEDE Campus Champions, and other organizations as appropriate
•Lead support and consulting to researchers in the use of UA HPC systems and resources
•Ability to Assess/evaluate complementary technologies/capabilities and methodologies for research data (cloud, Jupyter hub, Rstudio etc.)
•Actively engage with projects such as CyVerse and Data7, as well as related efforts and services
• Assist with proposal development
•Establish partnerships external to UA (such as other XSEDE centers) to support researchers that need extend beyond local computational capabilities

•Knowledge of advanced research computing technologies
•Demonstrated proficiency with advanced research computing technologies and techniques
•Experience in establishing and maintaining positive working relationships with senior administrators, unit directors, technology leaders, and support staff on an enterprise-wide basis.
•Excellent written and verbal communication skills that demonstrate an exceptional ability to articulate vision, direction, requirements, and priorities.
•Knowledge and understanding of large-scale compute infrastructures and architectures
•Knowledge and experience with data science techniques and technologies
•Service-oriented mindset
•Experience with shared governance in an IT environment
•Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor staff
•Knowledge of current and emerging practices and technologies related to visualization, with a specific focus on research visualization
•Knowledge of statistical practices in support of research in an academic environment.

Minimum Qualifications

•Master’s degree, or 8 years of experience working in research computing.
•Five years of experience in research computing, high-performance computing, or equivalent experience with technology in a higher-ed research academic environment
•Three years of management experience
•Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education approved by Human Resources.

Preferred Qualifications

•10 years of experience in higher-education.
•4 years of experience in managing a research computing group
