Position Summary

The College of Education’s Office of Student Services is seeking candidates for a position to provide academic advising to prospective and current College of Education undergraduate students. The successful candidate will support orientation programs, attend recruitment activities, assist in the College of Education admissions process, provide academic advising for students in the College of Education, attend relevant college, campus and Tucson area meetings, coordinate selected events and participate in program planning.

  • Provide leadership in the conduct, advancement, study, and evaluation of the process of education, education policy, and in educational organizations at local, state, national, and international levels
  • Provide service and support to local, state, national, and international educational agencies

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Advises students on academic, career and personal issues; identifies the educational and career options appropriate for each student; and assists with the analysis of each option, including possible outcomes and their implications.
  • Provides on-call advising assistance, including service at the Student Services Front Desk and scheduling appointments when necessary.
  • Assesses individual student’s stages of development (academic, career, and personal) and promotes student growth by determining suitable developmental tasks; assists student in establishing realistic and attainable academic and career goals.
  • Approves and certifies student’s programs of study for fulfillment of graduation requirements; approves and verifies proposed changes to programs and assists students in their completion; determines if all requirements such as general education, major, grade point average and total units have been met.
  • Evaluates academic credentials for transfer of credit or graduation requirements.
  • Monitors academic progress of students; determines eligibility and satisfactory progress toward degree; identifies current and potential needs or problem areas and refers students to appropriate campus resources for assistance.
  • Assists students in identifying factors that contribute to lack of academic progress; helps students examine alternatives when goals are unattainable; applies appropriate retention strategies to support student’s efforts.
  • Advises students in academic difficulty to develop academic action plan; reviews petitions for re-admittance; interviews re-admission applicants; recommends re-admittance or denial and monitors students’ progress.
  • Speaks to various organizations, students, and prospective students about the College of Education for recruitment and orientation purposes; prepares materials to promote and support the program and designs presentation format to address concerns of diverse groups; advises students regarding eligibility and admission procedures; assists with recruiting transfer students and incoming freshmen (may require evening or weekend presence).
  • Maintains academic files and provides information and statistical data upon request.
  • Coordinates selected events and special projects and events as directed (may require evening or weekend presence).
  • Serves as a liaison to selected campus groups such as CATS Academic.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a field related to area of assignment AND 0-2 years academic advising experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.
  • Understanding of university policies and procedures.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with UAccess.
  • Experience with advising undergraduate college students.
  • Technology expertise in web editing and in presentation software.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • Master’s degree in field related to area of assignment AND one year experience in teaching and/or advisement; OR, Bachelor’s degree in Education, Counseling or field related to area of assignment AND three years’ experience in teaching and/or advisement; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.
  • One year academic advising experience.
