Position Summary

The Clerkships allow students to learn in the clinical setting and become active members of the health care team. Students rotate through eight core clerkships, Family, Community and Preventive Medicine, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Surgery, which occur during the 3rd year. The Emergency Medicine and Neurology clerkships occur during the 4th year.

The clerkship experience includes interactive learning sessions on academic half-days, simulation activities and clinical site participation. Clinical assignments include both urban and rural sites.

Our major clinical partners include Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix (formerly Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center), Phoenix Children’s Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center and Barrow Neurological Institute, Maricopa Integrated Health Systems, Phoenix Baptist Hospital, HonorHealth, Phoenix VA Health Care System, Mayo Clinic, Hospice of the Valley and other important partners such as Yuma Regional Medical Center, Indian Health Services and underserved clinics throughout the state.
The Obstetrics and Gynecology Clerkship is an introductory experience in the provision of comprehensive medical care and counseling services to adolescent, adult and elderly female patients.

The obstetrical conditions and gynecological problems commonly encountered by the physician provide the primary focus for this clerkship experience, but knowledge of serious or less common conditions is also shared. Therefore, the basis for the clerkship is to introduce the clinical information thought to be fundamental in the education of all physicians.

Students will have the opportunity to engage in a variety of aspects within obstetrics and gynecology in all stages of life, resulting in a well-rounded experience Students are expected to achieve a level of responsibility in the clinical setting appropriate for a third year clerk including: independent data gathering, critical assessment of the data, and communication to other health professionals, as well as demonstrating professional behavior.

This is a part-time non benefits eligible interim appointment subject to applicable ABOR policy that is expected to last through June 30, 2018, but may continue through December 31, 2018 based on the need of the College.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assists with the design, implements and regularly assesses the clinical curriculum of the College of Medicine – Phoenix campus
  • Provides administrative oversight, including grade assignment, narrative assessment and formative, mid-clerkship feedback of all University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix students in the clerkship (may assign mid-clerkship feedback to site directors)
  • Orients students to the rotation or designates another faculty member to do so
  • Responsible for oversight of clerkship experience of medical students, including didactics, other learning experiences and clinical experiences
  • Problem solves any concerns medical students may have regarding the clerkship
  • Participates in clerkship director meetings (Clinical Curriculum Subcommittee) and other meetings as needed
  • Participates in evaluation of new experiences, new curricular considerations and new sites for that specific clerkship
  • Identifies and develops new rural sites and makes site visits to each site at least once a year
  • Collaborates with Director, Rural Health Professions Program, in planning rural experiences, including working with AHEC for grant funding opportunities
  • Encourages faculty members to participate in clerkship and elective experiences for the University of Arizona College of Medicine- Phoenix students
  • Assists with design and implementation of intersessions, transitions block and fourth year required blocks
  • Serves as advisor to students for clerkship and elective scheduling and career planning
  • May assist with planning and teaching in pre-clinical curriculum
  • Additional duties may be assigned

Management Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the recruitment, training and supervising activities of staff
  • Responsible for implementation of workflow procedures
  • Responsible for orientating and conducting training of new staff
  • Resolves issues relating to staff escalations
  • Works with staff to maintain and meet deadlines
  • Maintains work schedules team
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications
  • MD or DO or equivalent degree and license to practice in Arizona at the time of appointment
  • Board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the time of appointment.
  • Three years of Obstetrics and Gynecology clinical/medical education experience.
  • Currently precepts medical students in the clerkship.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Five years of experience in clinical medical education.
  • Performs clinical work at a primary clinical affiliate for Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Actively involved in American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist ACOG or the Association of Professors in Obstetrics and Gynecology APGO
