Position Summary

The Lowell Institute for Mineral Resources (IMR) Coordinator, Educational Outreach incumbent will work directly with the Co-Directors, researchers and collaborators of the Institute. There are currently 14 employees of the IMR, however the IMR works with over 50 affiliated faculty and researchers spanning 6 colleges across campus.
Although housed in the Lowell IMR Office which is in the Mines and Metallurgy Building, the Coordinator, Educational Outreach will also coordinate with the Business Center for the Department of Geosciences and the Lowell Institute for Mineral Resources, located in the Gould-Simpson Building.
The Lowell Institute for Mineral Resources brings together a unique breadth of faculty and students to tackle challenges critically important to society’s use of earth materials, then brings game-changing solutions by world-class collaborative research and by training industry professionals through onsite courses, field training and distance learning. This IMR partners with stakeholders around the globe and has educated professionals from over 2 dozen countries.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Educate K-12 students, instructors, and the interested public about the uses of mineral and rock resources and the mining process from exploration through development and production and finally reclamation and post-mining land use.
• Encourage students to pursue careers in the mining industry and inform them about the mining engineering and geology program at the UA, and available scholarships. Facilitate contact with high school teachers by keeping a database of teachers and their contact information that we can use for sending them information.
• Incorporate research findings and programs into materials presented to students and teachers wherever and whenever appropriate. Incorporate outreach materials created by UA when and where appropriate.
• Design hands on activities for K12 students, instructors, and the interested public to help them understand the formation, uses of, and extraction processes for minerals.
• Collaborate with UA student mining and geology clubs that also do outreach. Share activities and information that they can use with students and provide them with information on your program that they can share with teachers and parents.
• Maintain an Outreach website under the IMR website (www.imr.arizona.edu).
• Link content presented at schools to the state and national education standards.
• Assist in designing summer experiences for students at high school level as time and budget permits. Coordinator is not obligated to coordinate or teach summer camps.
• Meet with the Science Foundation Arizona STEM staff, Flandrau/UA Mineral Museum personnel and other UA museum personnel regarding collaboration opportunities. This will include collaboration with Eastern Arizona College on their GEAR UP program.
• Attend local, regional, national, international meetings to promote the Lowell IMR outreach program and to obtain new outreach materials.
• Work with national organizations such as the Minerals Information Institute and Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration as well as other organizations.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Ability to communicate with teachers and schedule travel to schools around State of Arizona, in schools 30-60% of the time
• Skilled in use of personal computers and software, particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
• Ability to solve problems and make decisions
• Ability to effectively communicate with staff, faculty, students, and industry professionals
• Ability to work independently and with a team
• Ability to track travel and expenses and meet university requirements for expense accounting

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in geology or mineral resources or related discipline
  • Industry experience in mineral resources
  • Experience with K-12 student outreach
  • Experience with adult outreach
Preferred Qualifications
  • Graduate degree in Geology or mineral resources or related discipline
  • Achievement of teaching certification in the past
