Position Summary

The University of Arizona seeks an outstanding individual at the rank of tenured Associate or Full Professor to provide scientific, educational and administrative leadership in the field of Interdisciplinary Applied Mathematics, with the expectation that the selected individual will assume the position of Chair of the University’s Graduate Interdisciplinary Program in Applied Mathematics for a renewable five-year term.

As one of the world’s premier public research universities, the University of Arizona is ranked 19th among public universities and 29th overall in research expenditures by the National Science Foundation. The University has a well-developed system of Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs, including the Program in Applied Mathematics, which was ranked among the top applied mathematics programs in the USA in the 2010 National Research Council assessments.

The Program faculty consists of some 75 researchers from numerous colleges and departments throughout the University, and approximately 50 doctoral candidates are currently enrolled. The Program receives strong support from the Department of Mathematics, including teaching assistantships for a substantial number of Applied Mathematics students.

Together with the Department of Mathematics and the Graduate Interdisciplinary Program in Statistics, the Program in Applied Mathematics is part of the School of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Arizona. The Program is noted for its interdisciplinary breadth, and about 50% of its Ph.D. dissertations have been directed by advisors from departments other than Mathematics. See for further information.

Duties & Responsibilities

The appointee will be expected to maintain an active, widely recognized and externally funded research program in some area(s) of applied mathematics and to actively seek external training grants to support the Program.

As Chair of the Program in Applied Mathematics, the appointee would be expected to provide leadership in the continued development of the Program’s quality and recognition, and would have the opportunity and resources to participate in faculty recruitment initiatives in partnership with other academic units. He/she will be expected to teach at the graduate and/or undergraduate levels, and will be appointed as a tenure-track or tenured faculty member in whichever department is most appropriate based on his/her areas of expertise, with the possibility of joint appointments in other relevant departments.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications

PhD in Applied Mathematics, Mathematics or closely related field.

Experience with contributing to outreach efforts, including those that engage traditionally underserved communities

The successful candidate is expected to possess a proven commitment to teaching and advising graduate students, demonstrated excellence in teaching at undergraduate as well as graduate levels, and a commitment to the recruitment and training of women and members of underrepresented minorities.

Demonstrated commitment to mentoring and supporting students from diverse backgrounds, including underrepresented students

Demonstrated commitment to supporting and engaging in department, college, and campus diversity efforts
