Position Summary

This is an exciting opportunity to take on a newly funded project to investigate T cell responses in cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, using mouse models and patient samples, in the laboratory of Dr. Karen Taraszka Hastings at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix. Other ongoing projects in our laboratory include studies of the role of gamma-interferon-inducible lysosomal thiol reductase (GILT) in antigen presentation, T cell development, melanoma outcome, autoimmunity, and redox status. Opportunities for professional development include presentation of research findings at national meetings, mentorship in grant and manuscript writing, teaching, and public policy, which will enhance career progression.

The Department of Basic Medical Sciences is a multidisciplinary unit composed of faculty with research interests in cardiac and vascular biology; developmental, cell and molecular biology; evolution of vertebrate morphology; gene environment interactions and epigenetics; host-microbe interactions and immunology; medical education; platform development, medical devices and procedures; and signaling and steroid biology. In addition, the Center for Applied NanoBioscience and Medicine and affiliate institutions such as the Translational Genomics Research Institute, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital/Barrow Neurological Institute and the Arizona Alzheimer’s Consortium offer abundant opportunities for collaborative research efforts.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Design and perform experiments, interpret data, and analyze results independently under the direction of the principal investigator.
  • Present research findings at internal, local and national scientific meetings.
  • Prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Grant writing, including generating preliminary data, submitting grant applications, and preparing progress reports.
  • Assist in training and supervision of technical staff and/or students.
  • Assume progressively more autonomous responsibilities for project development and execution with the aim of career maturation towards becoming an independent scientist. Additional career development opportunities will be tailored to individual’s goals.
  • There may be additional duties assigned as it relates to this position.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD or equivalent degree in Immunology or a related field.
  • Established track record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Expertise with multicolor flow cytometry, APC and T cell isolation from lymphoid organs, tumors and/or skin, and/or mouse models of cancer and autoimmunity.
