Position Summary

Performs operations in the materials laboratories (wood, metal, machine, glass, rapid prototyping, ceramics, synthetics, and concrete) in the College of Architecture, Planning, and Landscape Architecture (CAPLA).

Duties & Responsibilities

Lab Safety:
• Administers student safety orientations and lab equipment training (e.g., welding demos, table-saw operation, laser cutter, etc.).
• Enforces lab safety policies.
• Stocks and maintains inventory of provided safety equipment/first aid.
• Follows established procedures to maintain safety in the shop.
Lab Assistance:
• Supervises operation of specialized equipment for students and faculty (e.g., CNC router).
• Assists students in problem-solving and fabrication issues.
• Coordinates the activities of student workers.
• Assists laboratory manager in performing various shop activities.
• Operates shop equipment such as Band saws, table saws, shear, welding, etc.; makes minor repairs and makes arrangements for major repairs to be performed.
• Organizes supplies, materials or equipment and sets-up equipment for use.
• Keeps shop area clean.
• Inventories and requisitions supplies for assigned area; checks in shipments and restocks shelves.
• Performs clerical tasks such as filing, typing, labeling and billing; inventories and requisitions supplies and materials.
• Assists in training attendants or students working in the shop.
Lab Maintenance and Improvement:
• Cleans equipment and ensures it is in good working order; performs preventive maintenance.
• Performs electronic and mechanical repairs and calibrations on equipment or contacts appropriate party to perform repairs.
Additional duties may be assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Knowledge and skill in the principles and practices of wood and metal fabrication and machining.
• Knowledge of 3D software, Rhino, AutoCAD, etc.
• Knowledge of computerized or automated (CNC) systems.
• Knowledge of rapid prototyping and emerging technologies.
• Skill in supervising and coordinating the work of others.
• Ability to effectively communicate with others.
• Ability to work collaboratively with other interdepartmental laboratory facilities on campus.

Minimum Qualifications
Arizona Board of Regents Minimum Qualifications

Three years of related laboratory or field research experience; OR,any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.
