Position Summary

The School of Animal and Comparative Biomedical Sciences is currently seeking a well-organized and highly motivated person for the position of Research Technician for the Ravishankar Lab. The candidate will conduct food safety research investigating the survival strategies of foodborne bacteria in the food production and processing environments and evaluating control strategies for foodborne bacteria.

Duties & Responsibilities

*Planning and conducting experiments for the melons, biofilms and other projects as needed.
*Assistance in data analysis, preparation of reports to sponsors, presentations and research manuscripts.
*Guiding undergraduate students in the lab, regular meetings with the PI to update research progress and plans for future work
*Assisting with any outreach activities conducted by the lab team.
*Assisting in team projects and other lab activities as needed.

Specific examples of lab experiments in which the candidate will be involved include but not limited to the following: food and water sampling including collection and analyses of these samples, assessing attachment strength of foodborne pathogens on produce, evaluating the cross contamination potential of environmental matrices and the transfer rates of foodborne pathogenic bacteria in production environments, understanding the biofilm formation of foodborne pathogens on food contact surfaces, determining the efficacy of multiple hurdles including antimicrobials against foodborne pathogenic bacteria in vitro and on/in foods, and performing fluorescence and other microscopy, biophotnic imaging, and molecular techniques such as PCR, sequencing, etc.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

*Ability to perform aseptic techniques, standard microbiological techniques, proficiency in the use of microbiological equipment, biophotonic imaging, fluorescence microscopy, sampling of food and water, isolation, identification and confirmation of foodborne bacteria; data analysis.
*Proficiency in using various software.
*Good communication skills both oral and written.
*Ability to present research results during educational and outreach activities.

  • Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, Four years research experience appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.
Preferred Qualifications

Research experience in food safety, foodborne pathogens, plant antimicrobials, antimicrobial resistance, microscopy, biofilms and survival strategies of foodborne pathogens in production environments.
