Position Summary

The UAHS Center for Sleep and Circadian Sciences and the Department of Medicine is seeking a Research Specialist to join a continuously growing core lab that has recently been awarded multiple large multi-year research grants.

The selected candidate will perform a wide variety of standardized procedures encompassing all areas of the sleep center. They will assist with informed consenting, learn new protocols and collect questionnaires. They will also help, perform anthropometric measurements, collect biological samples from human subjects (such as blood, urine or saliva) and assist with measurement of vital signs as part of research studies.

This Research Specialist will help oversee critical parts of new research projects such as complex data-collection, set-up of sleep monitoring devices or therapy devices, statistical analyses, or laboratory procedures. The incumbent may supervise and coordinate research groups, taking charge of the execution of a research project from the design phase to go-live phase.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • May supervise activities of subordinates.
  • Perform daily coordination of a research group.
  • Execute all aspects of a research study protocol.
  • Travel to study participants’ homes to perform research experiments and may be required to work nights and weekends.
  • Determine best methods for identifying potential study participants for research studies.
  • Conduct one on one conversations with potential study participants in order to gain consent to participate in research studies.
  • Assist with the scheduling of study participant visit as well as conduct visits both in the clinic and in-patient hospital rooms.
  • Use University of Arizona vehicles to travel to study participants homes in order to preform study procedures.
  • Prepare and maintain regulatory material for several research studies.
  • Prepare and maintain research study amendments and annual reviews for submission to the Institutional Review Board.
  • Conduct site visits with study sponsors.
  • Create excel files for the purpose of data collection and organization.
  • Coordinate and perform data analyses as well as prepare final reports.
  • Order supplies and equipment for both the laboratory as well as general office supplies.
  • Contribute original ideas to the research project; plan and design research projects; write research proposals and co-author or author papers and manuscripts for publication.

  • Maintain a high level of integrity, ethics and professionalism.
  • Skill to effectively communicate both written and verbally.
  • Knowledge of Cerner Electronic Medical Records software.
  • Ability to learn new forms of data collection software and devices.
  • Knowledge of modern research methods, data collection and analysis and skill in their application.
  • Skill in analyzing and evaluating data.
  • Skill in report writing.

Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND two years related research experience; OR, Six years research experience appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with the principles and techniques of clinical research especially in the field of Sleep Medicine.
  • Ability to travel to different locations.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends.
