Position Information

Title Research Specialist, Senior (On Call) (Multiple Positions)
Department Dept of Emergency Medicine (0750)
Location UAHS - Tucson
Position Summary

This project participates in the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS). The NEISS program identifies product-related and/or trauma injuries sustained by the consumer public. Data collected through this project allows the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to enact measures to reduce injuries and deaths resulting from the use of consumer projects.

This position is responsible for reviewing all patient records in the Emergency Department at Banner University Medical Center through EPIC, the electronic health record (EHR) system currently used by Banner UMC. The incumbent reviews all EHR charts of patients who present to the Emergency Department to ascertain if an injury is involved. This requires a high level of understanding of injury systems and the ability to quickly scan medical background and extract relevant information from emergency department visits. The incumbent abstracts pertinent data from charts and uploads into the NEISS reporting database.

The primary mission of the CPSC is to protect the public from any unreasonable risk associated with consumer products. Currently there are 100 hospitals nationwide that participate in the NEISS system.
