Position Summary

The Enquist Lab in the department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Arizona, seeks to fill a lab manager position in a dynamic and high energy environment.

Research in the Enquist lab is focused on macroecology and biodiversity science, specifically (i) understanding the causes and consequences of biological diversity, (ii) elucidating how biological processes influence community and ecosystem-level processes, (iii) developing predictive models for how climate change has and will shape terrestrial diversity and ecosystem functioning, (iv) analyzing how threats to biodiversity will affect conservation options, and (v) researching the fundamentals of biodiversity distribution and evolution across scales.

The lab group comprises a large group of researchers and collaborators from across the globe that work in field locations spanning tropical to temperate forests and high alpine environments. Our analytical work involves computational, theoretical, and Big Data informatics initiatives. Our funding derives from local, US, and international sources that includes both private and governmental organizations.

The Lab Manager will work closely with graduate students, postdocs, and an international group of visiting lab collaborators. This position serves as a primary point of contact for the Enquist Lab and may represent the Lab in certain situations. The incumbent will be the entry to the inner workings of the lab group, specifically operating at the interface of the development of lab funding efforts, lab logistics, and assistance of management data collection and curated databases (including specimen records, trait measurements, and ecological communities as well as dozens of permanent forest plots and their associated data). Duties & Responsibilities

General duties include:

  • Assistance with lab administration and logistics
  • Facilitation of lab events (weekly lab meetings, planning, collaborator meeting organization, participant coordination, scheduling, etc.),
  • Assistance with lab website maintenance (development, design, editing, posting of web content, etc.), overseeing data collection and data management of the differing lab projects as well as data collection efforts by undergraduate students and technicians
  • Assistance with project management, including the development of data (collection, analysis, visualization, curation, etc.) and scientific presentations.

Main tasks include:

  • Assistance with grants administration, including: Budget crafting and budget planning. Coordination with EEB front office on university protocols and needed information. Ability to anticipate deadlines and changes in funding streams to ensure continuation of lab science efforts. Taking the initiative on budget planning
  • Manage lab travel logistics and planning. This will include: helping to manage the various field work and efforts within the lab and with international collaborators. Assisting with visiting scholars and visas for international students and visitors. Handling of receipts for reimbursements, etc. Assisting with domestic and international travel logistics.
  • Scientific and collaborator meeting organization and facilitation. This will include acting as the scheduling coordinator for meeting participants and working with the lab PI to organize meeting agenda and event planning.
  • Facilitating and coordinating day-to-day lab needs and events. This will include working with the PI to organize and manage weekly lab schedules, meetings, and research efforts by undergraduates and lab technicians.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications
  • The successful candidate must be able to effectively communicate abstract and technical information both orally and in writing as well as place priority focus on helping lab scientists in research.
Arizona Board of Regents Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND three years of teaching experience which includes two years of supervisory experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in either Geography, Biology, Ecology, Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems or a related field.
  • Previous work with biological databases, project management, and grants budget management is preferred.
  • Experience with biological data collection, databases, and web page management and design is desirable.
